Correct. I have no idea why you would want to use second. I believe R would give you even more resistance to motion.
Always park with the handbrake and in gear, and I always check that I am in neutral before starting the car (but I don't usually press in the clutch).
A surprising number of cars on the road have almost non functioning handbrakes. My girlfriend texted me this morning and told me the car was driving funny and making a funny noise, turns out she drove for a number of miles with the handbrake on. The handbrake in her car doesn't really work, as a result of this she always get mad at my after I drive the car because she Isn't strong enough to take the parking brake off after I set it.Footbrakes are even worse. Ever driven a car with FOUR pedals on the floor? Fuck that.

my integra got so bad with its sticky PB -
that i'd periodically (weekly) drive it in reverse down some back street or alley
while pumping the foot brake - just to set the shit back.
was always worse during winters.
The less it was used - the less it was a problem.Comment

people like you are the reason neutral safety switches were invented. Thanks, I wish the guy at this mechanics shop I took mine to tonight would have left it in Neutral. It was dark and I didn't see that he left it in 1st with NO handbrake on, so my car lunged forward a bit when I tried starting it. I see the reasons for leaving it in gear, but when it's a customers car and you don't know what their preference is, you should leave it in Neutral with the handbrake ON!!

I'm the only one who drives my car, so I don't have to worry about somebody putting it in gear (I often don't even get in my car when I start it). but sometimes with our other car, somebody will put it in gear, so I still check to see if it's in neutral or not. Even with a clutch switch, if you don't know it's in gear the car will lurch when you let out the clutch.
I don't really see how you could actually *start* the car while it's in gear. I've done it a couple times, the car usually moves forward a foot or so, but unless you're a moron and keep trying to start it that's about all that happens.
as far as the ebrake being broken, that's a pretty fucking pathetic excuse. :pComment

Parking brake only, unless its a pretty steep hilll, then parking brake +gear. Never had issues with any of my multiple 5 or 4 speed cars.
