They're unique and look cool, I think that's basically all it needs.

I don't know why, but I find it sad that so many Deloreans were destined to live their lives as movie prop replicas.

To be honest - that's about all they're good for. They were turd cars really - slow, poor handling, low grade GM interior. If not for the movie, they wouldn't be held in such high regard.
