I think it all comes down to personal preference.

I started shopping a while ago for a newer car. I looked at 5er wagons, Audi Avants, even went so far as considering a truck so I could haul stuff for my house.

I wanted something I found attractive, fun to drive, utilitarian and most importantly something I could work on with relative ease. All the new car dealers were offering free maintenance and silly hats to go with the cars, none of which I cared about. I didn't feel like giving $500 of my money/month to drive something I could settle on.

You know what I did? I got a '91 Range Rover County. It doesn't run yet, it looks like shit, I haven't even sat in it. I paid nothing for it and I am very pleased with myself. It will do everything the newer stuff I looked at will do and will cost me less in maintenance & resto over the first year than it would cost me in 3 months of car payments and insurance.

Can I afford to buy a nice new car? Yeah. Do I want one? I dunno. Will I spend my money on it. Probably not. I'll buy a new car when Mr. Average is done paying the depreciation for me and doesn't think it's worth anything anymore. /rant

So, you needed a DD and a truck to haul stuff and ended up purchasing a non running landrover from the lowest point of LR reliability. That's saying something coming from land rover. You didn't want a car payment, so you bought someone's lawn ornament.

      Smart.

I feel as if imported cars are getting bigger while domestics are getting smaller. I think this world needs the era of hot hatches back :)

Pedestrian safety (tall bubbly hoods) and aerodynamics for the same of mpg (everything looking like a Prius) are a BIG part of the problem.

The desire to sell as many cars as possible has become the dictator of design.

As we now have global markets, everything is watered down to appeal to the masses. Design traditions have been smashed to pieces.

Yes, before 2003, no one designed a car for sales reasons.

One point, in a new car if you do something you can not get away with it.

Exodus, Charlie admits it all in his sig, "Bonafide BMW elitist prick." Nuff said :)

@BoxDriver, those are beautiful trucks, I would be just as happy to find one, though it isn't at all what I need right now.

@those who said that all old cars were once new, point taken, but look at most of the BEST looking cars from the 2000's. There are only a small few that are truly good looking, and are their any that will go down as classics?

Then look at just the year 1977, that one year saw twice as many if not more absolutely beautiful cars then the whole span of 2000-2010. You can say that for most years between 1920 and 1979.
