There are a lot of great newer sports cars for around 10K. E46 M3's are steadily approaching that number too. Anyway, the appeal of the E30, IMO is that it is known for it's build quality, perfect balance of new/old technology and they could be had cheap...at least they used to be. People bought them when they bottomed out, fixed them up and sold them for more than they paid. Demand is going strong especially with all of the magazine features and of course engine swaps. Engine swaps brought enthusiasts and non BMW enthusiasts into the E30 game. So with all of this demand and limited supply of clean E30's...u get higher asking prices. There is also the old school factor.
The E30 Prices Are TOO DAMN HIGH!!

Prices are ridiculous. Bottom line. There are some ads on the first page in the classified section of this forum that are down right delusional with their asking price.
That's not meant to be inflammatory, I've just been shaking my head lately as I've browsed through E30 ads. A lot of it seems unwarranted and very sudden.Comment

Why do you think people buy 2002s when you could get an nice e46 for the same price or less than a nice 2002? I shouldn't have to explain why to someone that owns an e30.
What made E30's so appealing to me was that you got a well built, reliable, rear wheel drive, sports oriented car with a great platform to build on for around three grand. Now I'm more inclinded to go towards Miata's, E36's, E28's, or 944's as opposed to E30's. You're going to get screwed over by insurance if you get in a wreck because they'll never give what it would take to replace your car.
For me e30s are more of a hobby and interest than simply a utility or form of transportation, even though I have been daily driving nothing but e30 for years, year round. There is simply no other car that can fill the same boxes as the e30 regardless of initial cost, and I have thought a lot about it. Just to name a few: size, weight, availability, aftermarket support, enthusiast scene, age, styling, simplicity, balance, RWD, build quality, modification options, swaps...
If your spending upwards of 10k on your e30 project, the fact that a good starter e30 cost 5k instead of 3k is relatively insignificant. You should be glad it doesn't cost double that, because it does cost easily double that for an equivalent condition 2002. It's going to have an impact on people looking for a cheap beater or cheap kids looking to rice them out but I have no problem with that, it keeps them away from the clean ones.:DLast edited by VinniE30; 07-18-2012, 01:28 PM.Zinno '89 <24v swap in progress>
