    the things I see:
    -cash for clunkers
    -drift tax
    -hipster stance kids

I'm pretty sure the car I bought in 2002 would be difficult to find and overly expensive these days. Ironically I got into E30s because it was the most competent AWD package for the price. an equivalent Subaru was a POS base model and cost 5k more..

That's why I pulled the trigger and bought one. May not be the perfect car I've been looking for over the past 8 years but at the rate they're appreciating it's better to start now. Especially up here where a rust free body is nearly impossible to find.

LOL ... I love it! I've got (well, almost) two out of the three! Be interesting to see if the fixed-roof E30s do anywhere as well as the cabrios.

I have to agree with the video 100%, although over here the Triumph with all the smog crap is a real dog (pre '74 you might be onto something, post '74, not so hot.) The Rolls Royce, interesting. If you want a touring car, well, you can't get any more posh than a rolls. I can't say I'm a big fan of the body style, but heck, its still a rolls.

The E30, hard or soft top, they already have a huge following and the number of good one gets smaller seemingly almost by the day. $15K for a nice one, yeah I believe it. I've seen a few this year that were asking that. Yes they were really clean and low mileage but still, very nice examples. If you factor in the M3 prices, I can only guess what those will be in 5 years.

I watch the sports car market pretty closely. In the past year I've watched several cars go way up in price (I own two of them) and others sort of go backward, the Alfa GTV for example. They were bringing mid to high $30Ks a few years ago and at the end of 2011, they plummeted (right while I was fighting with the insurance over the value of my '69 1750. :( ) They haven't really rebounded. Others such as my Datsun have gone well up. I've seen several tall windshield 2 liter roadsters go for close to $40K. Up till this year those kinds of prices were reserved for the rare 67.5 2000s and only the top cars brought those kinds of prices. (I'm not even going to try and value mine, its too unique for the mass market. Its either too much racecar for the street or not enough race car for the track depending on who you talk to. Still, it doesn't give up much ground to a fully prepped race version despite having a drag and weight penalty.)

The E30s while not a sports car does have a pretty huge following and they are well built cars. The proof being the number that are still on the road. The are well thought out, you can fix them, and they drive well. What more do you want?

Interesting observations, Will. Your comment about the GTV -- would you say that goes for stepnoses as well, or just the non-stepnoses?

The only stepnose that is actually special are the GTAs, and the prices on those have remained the same if not gone up.

Here is an ad for a '67 Stepnose, looks to be a pretty clean car at $12K.

I could see that car easily being worth twice that.

Currently I can't find any GTVs that aren't rusty for sale. (I didn't look super hard) but still the rusty ones are bringing $6-10K, the clean ones are only about $15K or so. I can't say why the prices are down. The demand for them is there, but the prices just haven't rebounded to where they were in 2010 and earlier. I think there was a clean '69 GTV that sold at Monterey in '09 for something like $42K. It wasn't perfect, looked like a clean driver. That was surprisingly high, but again there were only 640 US spec '69 GTVs built and less than 200 remain (which makes the loss of mine sting even more. :-x )

By the way, AAA valued this car (mine) at $6400 before the accident I was the 3rd owner, all original aside from the wheels and springs. No rust, ran great.

My appraiser put it at $18500

My buddy Terry Major was always out with the Alfa club in SoCal, my shop did a lot of work with his track prepped MR2. I love those cars.
