ouch! why you gotta be like that man! I know it's slow, but that's part of the plans. I'm talking to a guy a few towns over who has an m10 bored out to 92mm with an m3 crank in it. I could get it pretty cheap, then I would have a reason to learn some megasquirt. It was either that or swap in an m20/m42/whatever. My first thought was to swap in another motor, but if I could get that motor and swap it in for the same amount of money I would be spending on a used motor/tranny, why not go with the rebuilt motor? Then I would have the lightness of the mighty 318i with a little more power to push it around. It's just a project. If I really wanted a nice, shiny, e30 I would have spent the money for one. As it stands right now, I have less the $800 into my car, including the cost of the car.

Unless it's got a major motor underneath the hood, most e30's can't pull it off.
I might do it if I ever get my 'ic "t-bucket" idea off the ground.

I dunno about stroking an M10, it still would make less power than an M20, cost a lot more, and probably be less reliable.Comment

I may have a complete M42 swap (engine, trans, all accessories) up for grabs when I do a S50 swapizzle. It would be cheap, I gots a buck seventy seven on the clock. Still pulls strong though, I have a Dinan chip in the ECU.
Anyway, your paint looks pretty good for a car from 84, especially in an area where most red E30s have peeling clearcoat etc. If you're gonna get it professionally sprayed I'd do a basecoat clearcoat job, if you're doing it in your garage, I'd use a less poisonous paint and just go at it with a decently forgiving shade.

If it isn't a stock color, it isn't cool on an e30. That being said, I think it looks great and I thought of it a couple years ago. But like I said, stock is best.Grant Wescott

Why..I've owned a few versions of all of those cars so I can say whatever the fawk I want about 'em. It's nothing against them though, but rather the Sport Compact Car reading public that take a perfectly good OE paint job, sand it off and spray on 20 bucks worth of Kylon to acheive some look reserved for broke ass greasers 50 years ago.Originally posted by DigitalwaveAny of which cars I'd rather own over an early 318i like yours.

Cost more yes, be less powerful yes, but less reliable? Chain vs. belt.Originally posted by DigitalwaveI wasn't refering to you, rather to the guy the said flat black belongs on Civics etc.

I have heard using a S14 crank w/ a 2.0 m10 will get you around 190 hp N/A (absolutley quoting hear say). But as I have already done....just slap a turbo/ and MS and call it a day.Comment

So you'd rather spend more money on an engine that makes less power because a chain is somehow more reliable than a belt? Every time somebody mentions the M20 belt I just have to laugh. It's like $40 in parts and takes about an hour to do, what's the big fucking deal? If you're a moron and drive it for 70,000 miles before changing then you get what you deserve..Originally posted by terrybppCost more yes, be less powerful yes, but less reliable? I'm gonna call BS on whoever said that. A stock S14 with more displacement and a much better flowing DOHC 16v head only makes 195bhp.Originally posted by terrybppCost more yes, be less powerful yes, but less reliable? Chain vs. belt.

I'm just saying that there are tons of m10's that have never been opened up with 200k miles on them. But every m20 has to be opened up every 50k miles so that the belt doesn't fly apart and destroy the head. Not exactly reliable.Originally posted by nandoSo you'd rather spend more money on an engine that makes less power because a chain is somehow more reliable than a belt? Yeah, after I wrote the 190 hp thing it didn't seem quite right. I've definelty heard of the setup but never seen it applied or in action.Comment
