After a few cars that had little to no aftermarket parts I wanted something I could learn how to wrench on. Started modding to get more out of it, to make it look better, to help others later with problems/upgrading around me, and to track eventually, because it looks like a hell of a lot of fun. Life moves pretty fast, if you don't stop to look around every once in awhile you could miss it. So do what you want while you can.

I love the "I am modding my car so that one day 7 years down the road I can go to a track maybe" mentality. Why don't you just spend the money you are throwing at mods on a track day instead?

Because its better then just buying something new and driving it.

              Whats the fun in that?

<- chronically suffers from ‘might as well’ and ‘while I’m at it’ syndrome.

                Purchased car.
Shifter was sloppier than a wet noodle in a bowl of porridge.

Had to fix that with new bushings..
Might as well go with a SSK while I’m at it.

                Since transmission had leaks..
Might as well replace seals while I’m at it.

Since I was replacing transmission fluid..
Might as well replace all the fluids.

                Since drive shaft was removed..
Might as well replace flex disk and CSB while I’m at it.

Since car was up on stands..
Might as well replace worn subframe bushings while I’m at it.

                Since subframe was removed..
Might as well replace rear brake lines while I’m at it.
Hell, might as well replace all brake lines while I’m at it.
                .. and full fluid flush

While I’m at it, might as well update and refurbish the whole suspension.
Hmmm.. sure do have a lot of this suspension removed..
Might as well replace the differential to a limited slip unit.

Damn ! the instrument cluster needs to come out for new SI batteries..
Might as well get a cool steering wheel while I’m at it.

Shit ! My exhaust canister has a rusted hole in it !
Might as well replace with a Supersprint cat back.
Might as well replace the rusty cat converter too.
(and the O2 sensor while I’m at it)

Boy.. sure seem to be doing a lot of maintenance here.. might as well get new hoses under the hood.. and plugs.. and wires.. and filters.. and on.. and on.. :|

                    Ok, I'll actually come clean.

I'm modding my car because I'm from a race of people called Zerkon V. In our home galaxy we have no cars, so we miss out the feeling of pissing away hard-earned money on an old, mass-made, out-dated depreciating tool.

We miss out on fiddling with what intelligent people spent years designing, and so we do not know of the feelings of joy you must all experience when these expensive parts fail, or a related part fails due to becoming the next weakest link in the chain.

In Zerkon V, there is nothing like modifying an E30... we don't get the joy of driving a car so loud it renders the radio useless, and sends passengers deaf, there are no super-stiff suspension that rattles loose all the low-rent interior plastics making it sound like there's a mouse behind the dash that's being beaten to death with a maracca.... We don't get bodykits that have been scrimped and saved for over months so we also unfortunately miss out on smashing them 12hours after fitting them on a driveway.

Yes, we miss out on all the fun points of modifying cars :(

i mod my car for two reasons:

1)i really enjoy wrenching, and generally working on cars
2)i want to drive a car that puts a smile on my face

I heard autos are slushbuckets and comparable to driving a boat. Might was well swap to 5 speed. Might as well put in a sports clutch. Also might as well put in a short shift kit.

Since my car as 140k on the stock suspension, might as well upgrade since it'll give out any day now. Might as well go with a coilover kit.

Since I'm experiencing steering difficulties, might as well upgrade to a z3 rack.
Renting my rear wheel bearing tool kit. SIR

I think this is a great question...I am new to R3V and just bought my second E30. It's bone stock with the exception of a K&N cone filter that the previous owner popped on. After poorly attempting my old E30, an 87' eta, I've realized that as much of a divestment it is, it's addictive. I've owned my current car for less than a month now and already am making plans for tasteful upgrades. It's an obsession that needs to be fed. Once you get bit by the E30 bug, there's no turning back.
