Get a proper electric fan relay? If needed you can throw and override switch in as a fail safe. Can ever set up a timer for cooldowns after the car is off.
    Swanny!

not to get far off topic, Ive read on the cluster temp gauge the needle should be at the half or below mark.

I found this for an e34. on my m20b2.5, the needle hardly ever moves past the first quarter (144), even when temp should be normal.

If you have the correct t-stat then the needle should be between 195 and 182 (90 and 83 C) marks. I know a lot of you guys in the hotter climate have 70 C t-stat and the needle should be around 153 mark.

You should not need the aux (electric) fan AT ALL to keep your E30 at the correct temp unless you're actually using the AC.
false, or else they wouldn't have added a thermocouple to the side of the radiator :)

MR 325 is correct, if the aux fan comes on when A/C is not on then you have an issue. Even on a modified stroker engine i could never get the aux fan to work unless the A/C was on. it just never got hot enough even on a 113 summer day.

i would look at at as a backup device at best and if it comes on regularly the cooling system needs to be fixed

I've owned multiple E30's with the AC removed which means there is no AUX fan to come on... All of my E30's have been well maintained and have NEVER had cooling issues. Even on the hottest 110 degree California days under full load uphill or sitting in traffic my cars would NEVER pass the halfway point. So I'll stick with my advice in saying that you should never need the AUX fan to keep a car cool if the AC is not running.

To MR325, are you talking about an m20 or m50? Because i have an m50b25tu and their is barely any room for a stock fan which is why i installed the aux...

the aux fan wont keep the engine cool by itself

Non a/c cars don't have an aux fan since there isn't the obstruction of a condenser in the way of the radiator. Tow a 1500 lbs (or full euro-style and tow 3000lbs - lol) trailer uphill and that aux fan will come on ;D
