I wanted the snot out of one when i was in the market for my e30. I don't dream about cars often but one of those made it to me. Something about compact 80s cars with funk but modern touches in all the right places kills me. My dad who spent his career in mercedes isnt capable of wanting any car more than a proper Porsche (not in 911s at all interestingly), but told me this one was one of the few mistakes they made and that the maintenance wouldn't be worth it. We agreed an e30 would be more realistic.

I wish my e30 didnt happen to be the most unreliable one ever made because i twist my head every time I see a 944, wishing I had an excuse that I missed maintenance nightmares at least. These days I tell myself its v12 costs for 4 cylinder reward under the hood so i can stay sane. If i was more into ls swaps it would be a future project but i cant think of a tasteful and effective way to give it reliable na power. Not that 200 hp isnt plenty for it but 4 cylinders are only cool when theyre cheap.

Good question. I always liked them. I have heard they are high maintenance and aren't easy to work on. My friend had a 944S and had continuous problems. Perhaps the reason they are priced low is because most old Porsche enthusiasts are looking at 911's, 996, etc. 944's aren't exactly rockets either.

        For those in need...

Just think of it this way.

At least it's not as much of a pain in the ass as a 928.

E30 has a real back seat. 944... has a Porsche back seat.

I believe you but seems strange that they are that slow. Must be a much different torque curve especially compared to the 6'es. The power to weight looks real similar or even better if these numbers are accurate. From Hagertys site....

And that, right there, is why people put up with the maintenance and low power. For my money, there are few better-looking cars on the road, period.

The LS swap is interesting, as it fixes a lot of problems with the car. But it's not cheap unless you can do a lot of fabrication yourself, and unless you get Turbo drivetrain parts, which also aren't cheap or easy to find, you're going to break stuff if you drive it hard.

Oh, totally. That V8 is the shit. My dad traded his old 914/6 for a 928S when I was a wee lad and we used to just go on the backroads and take a nice long drive.

It's just that I've heard reliability is more of a concern in the 928 moreso than the 944 or 924. Their electrical systems are a nightmare is the most common thing that I've heard.

Very true, but 10-20 years ago they were near-worthless because they weren't considered to be "true" Porsches. Well, regular 914s, anyhow, the 914/6 was always worth something. I could see the same thing happening with 944s in the future.
