Are you also backing the 20K valuation based on grainy pictures and the price tag?
That's what I'm counter-balancing. I can't simply look at 'hey it's worth $20K because he paid 20K' and not comment on that because that's bull.
Market sets the price. Market also devalues the price of those who buy at a price that rest of the market does not agree.
There is a trend in this thread where people with financial/etc backgrounds are calling this a dud and 'purists' are calling this a great deal with zero context.
Latter will get reaction from former. Just like any civilized discussion.Comment

congrats OP, Im glad you are totally happy with your purchase. I think when the time is right if you decided to add a lightweight flywheel along with a chip it will really make you enjoy your purchase even more.
Now its time to invest in a good camera!!!! hahah and post pics of the Jag while you're at itSimon

so you presume you're the only one with any background in finance?
I agree with Kronus. what are you even arguing about here? that cars are houses? FYI - houses typically appreciate, unlike cars. ;)Comment

Why wouldn't it retain it's value? E30 values are only going up. It's not like he's gonna daily drive it.Comment

Listen guys, we are enthusiasts. Most of us have been in the game a while and remember when these cars bottomed out. This doesn't mean they have to stay there and it doesn't mean that all enthusiasts are the same. If you missed out, chances are you will have to pay a premium. If I didn't have E30's and got into the game this late...I would probably buy the best example (although it would be an M3 vs 318iS) I could afford also because original low miles E30's are very rare these days.
My point is this...when I started working on these cars at 15, I was working 2 jobs minimum wage, saving money just to get a $350 Dinan chip and $500 Sebring cat back for my ETA. I had way more time than money so I studied E30's and did things myself. I came to enjoy it and I still do...however, as I get older and more established, time is a lot more valuable than money. Family, kids, career are typically not conducive to this hobby of ours. Sometimes it's better to get the car that's already done instead of building it yourself...you save time, stress and money a lot of times. This is a car that's about 90% perfect and the OP has more money than time. This car being original and unrestored in this condition will hold it's value better than the others as well. So let's not forget about the other end of spectrum. With that said, we all value our time differently. For some $23k builds their dream E30 and for others it buys a pristine, low mileage, original E30 as it left the factory.Last edited by reelizmpro; 05-27-2015, 10:48 AM."I'd probably take the E30 M3 in this case just because I love that little car, and how tanky that inline 6 is." - thecj

looks like travish made another account
also, ITT: old dudes who've been in the e30 game for far too long, dying for a way to justify all the time/money they spent on their cars by lauding OPs decision to buy an overpriced EAG m42 powered carLast edited by jalopi; 05-27-2015, 11:13 AM.Comment

Worth less than $7,000 technically since it needed a little work.....
***High Retail Value
This vehicle would be in excellent condition overall. It could be a completely restored or an extremely well-maintained original vehicle showing very minimal wear. The exterior paint, trim, and mechanics are not in need of reconditioning. The interior would be in excellent condition.
Note: This value does not represent a ‘100 Point’ or ‘# 1’ vehicle *.
* ‘100 Point’ or ‘# 1’ vehicle is not driven. It would generally be in a museum or transported in an enclosed trailer to concourse judging and car shows. This type of car would be stored in a climate-regulated facility***
Just sayin.Last edited by jim87; 05-27-2015, 11:26 AM.Comment

And I said less than $7k, that's according to nada and other value finders, not EAG who is selling the car.
Is my minty fresh Rolex that was $5k new worth $20,000 just cause I've never worn it? No. Some random idiot with money might pay that because its what he wants but that doesn't mean the value is $20,000.
In the end its an e30 with a 4cyl engine, its not that rare and just because it is low mileage and not messed with doesn't make it worth THAT much more than what the books say it is. Just because a ritzy dealer asks that much doesn't mean its worth it, they just know there are people who will pay it because they have the money, and that people are dumb enough to believe if a reputable dealer asks that much then it must be worth it.
Take that car and try to sell it to a normal everyday BMW dealer, see what they will give you for it. I bet they don't offer more than $7500.Comment
