Scion is biting the dust, finally.

It’s official: Toyota’s ostensibly youth-oriented brand, Scion, will come to an end this year. Starting this fall all Scion models will be re-badged as Toyotas instead, the company announced today.

So it looks like Scion is getting shut down. I guess that means the Matrix and Celica badging might return, and future FR-S models will be actually labeled GT-86s.

That and now that Toyota is working with Daihatsu more, hopefully we'll see some of their small cars hit US shores. I'd love to see the Copen and Mira over here.

Toyota must have been worried that Scion was bringing to much pressure to produce "exciting" cars. The brand didn't fall in to their company mantra of "Cars that don't stick out in a parking lot."

Existing models will be brought back in line with the existing Toyota models, offering only cloth interiors, 4 doors, steel wheels with plastic covers, and colors limited to Gold, White and Gold/Beige.

AAA and ARP discounts will be extended to all former Scion models.

The irony in Scion is that they were marketed towards the young 20 somethings, but all the young 20 somethings are just going out there and buying Miatas, 240s and E36s. I have seen more elderly folks in Scions, and the rare "my tC is a sports car" doucheroo.

They wanted the younguns to start at a Scion, move up to a Toyota, and then to a Lexus, but it bombed colossally.

I'm actually really happy it died. I always thought it was a pointless company and was actually really disappointed when the GT-86 came out and then the States got the FRS. I mean its the same car so who cares, but I think it could have done a lot of good for Toyota to have their name on the car over here. I really like the direction Japanese cars are going, not saying I'd ever buy one, but I think they're headed in the right direction, much like Ford.

I never really got the young kid thing either, they are still $ to their market. If I was forced into buying/leasing a new car it would not be a scion.

I do think the fr-s looks great with a scion badge

Yup, the Scions around here are mostly driven by middle- aged eco-somethings who think a Prius is too Priatic.

Same happened to the Honda box- thingy- Element- that 20- somethings were supposed to live
out of at the beach- instead, it became a replacement for the VW Bus, and
              few under 40 bought it.

Thank god. I've always hated the Scion branding.

The 2015 4Runner rental we had for vacation this year was amazing.

That cheap feeling I have come to expect from Japanese interiors just wasn't there. It was a tank mechanically speaking and had an interior that hangs with the best of them.
