    Hmmm...

Ok, so I just got my new registration for my car. I haven't had any registration for my car for about 6 months because it got stolen when my wallet got stolen last summer. So, I was asking the ARS collective where I should keep my car registration. Should I keep it in my wallet? Should I...

One is in my wallet and one in the glove box. It's perfectly legal to make copies of your registration.

glovebox and/or sunvisor. Less likely to pull a gun out of the sunvisor vs glovebox. I'd rather not get shot reaching in the trunk. I mean maybe it would be fine in the toolkit or something. That's in plain view.

How is your registration/insurance card considered valuable?

Why not just keep the registration and insurance in your wallet?

I do this because I'm the only one who drives my car, and it's also with my license. My wallet goes everywhere with me. This is likely your best solution.

Sounds like a good way to get shot.

You cant pull the pin up if you double lock it.

For one, I sometimes like to leave my windows down when I go into a store if I know I don't have anything valuable inside my car - and it just keeps everything in one place, neat and organized.

Two, more to my question ......my theory is, that if I were to get pulled over he'll need me to get out to get get it - and the more time to have to interact with a cop, the less likely he'll just look at me as another ticket he's handing out to another name-less, face-less driver.

Good idea or bad? Legal or not legal?

Back in the 70's or 80's all the cool kids had those little clear pockets that clipped to your sunvisor that you could put your registration in.

Fairly certain they were all bought from JC Whitney catalogs next to the CB radios.

I think my dad's 78 Volvo had a pocket built into the visor for this purpose

GG is asking about a traffic stop. He's already in the car - no dead bolt.

I keep mine between the drivers seat and center console. My car has a leak which goes straight into my glove box so you know how that goes. But I wouldn't keep it in the trunk. The less complicated you make things with police, the better.

well, there's the old scam where they break your window, steal your garage opener and registration, then use it to rob your house. I still don't think that is very common but it's at least plausible.

Here a registration is basically worthless (it's not proof of ownership and can't be used to transfer the title), but that's not the case everywhere.

That said, I still don't think it's really worth the hassle. I just keep it in the glovebox. I dunno though, it's been a long time since I've been pulled over.

My neighbor is a cop and I asked him this question. The answer is that cops are trained this way. They will continue to ask for your registration and insurance paper whenever they stop you. Don't even think about showing the registration on your smart phone. They want to concentrate on the job at hands and not looking through your phone. They expect you to have those papers in the glove box because it has been like that forever. Don't do anything stupid and put it elsewhere in the car. Remember that cops cannot read what is in your mind and don't have time to listen to what you say (although they should listen). Just do what they ask and everyone will be fine. Always remember that they stop you for a reason so you are at fault already.
