    Is this an M42 or M44? 1995 318i

I thought the M44 started in 1996, but this engine from a 95 318i looks like an M44.

Owner is parting out the car and Im looking for a pre 96 M42, wondering if there was a grey area, perhaps late 95s moved to the M44?

I know the M44 comes with more tech than I need, looking to swap in to an E21

I think M44, you can usually tell by the intake manifold.

Thats what I was thinking, but its possible its just the m44 styled intake on an m42... I dont know. Pretty confused.

That may be how *all* e36 M42 look, the E30 M42 has the different manifold.

          Appears to be an m42.

M42, by the flapper door airbox. I have a 7-95 ti with the M42... and it looks just like that.

The 'latest' M42's started looking a lot like M44's in the bolt- on bits, like fuel injectors, etc.

M42 and m44 have different oil filter housings. I think one is plastic and one is metal?

Unless it's been swapped, AFM = M42. If you look down the oil fill with a flashlight you can see a rocker arm if it's a M44 head.

That's an M42. M44s have a different cam angle sensor setup.
