From an objective point of view, not taking into account the OP's or anyone else's ability to learn and adapt, it would be a wiser choice to learn to wrench on the e30 with the help of this forum and the internet, and then take the knowledge acquired and transfer it to the other bmw. Use the write ups as a crutch before you know exactly what you're looking at on your own. But being that OP is a noob at cars, this would take a long time and he'd be making payments on the F30 that would be just sitting in his driveway.

You could prioritize projects and repair the most necessary ones first while still driving the car... but paying a mechanic to fix it just to sell it and get out from under the car would leave you making payments on a car you no longer own. A hard decision to make for a 16 yo inexperienced with finances.

I'm 23 years old, have 3 cars, and I will tell you straight up that 2 of them are completely unnecessary. I don't know if I'm missing something, but I don't see any real benefit to keeping the car.

I know he has put more than 10 hours into the car and also got it in to BMW of bend for free. I trust his word more than anything. He has helped way more then needed. When he tells me not to keep it, I trust that. He doesn't want to buy the car that is for sure.

Been a while since I've posted on here but figured I'd step in, first off I've never heard of N20's (or n26 is more likely what you have installed) failing out of the blue like you mentioned earlier. In my opinion the N20/ N55 are the best engines BMW's offering right now.. (for the record that doesn't mean I like them). Now the N63? Stay away from that thing. N20's are noisy engines, maybe the foam padding under the acoustic cover is missing making it seem more noisy then usual. Also to the guy who said these have turbo lag, no they don't. Max torque practically starts at about 1,500 rpms on these new gen engines. N20's are a fairly good engine, I of course prefer working on a M54 or older, but still its not like there ticking time bombs like mentioned earlier. Now would I ever own one? No. These new cars once they get out of warranty will rob you blind, coming from a dealer tech.

Edit: Oh ya, wanted to mention your trusted mechanic is 100% not using dealer diagnostic equipment since its impossible to use anywhere else outside the dealer.

Turbo cars all have turbo lag. Whether they make it less perceptible or not, the fact is, it's there. It also has the powerband of a tractor (yes, I understand the days of the high-revving, N/A BMW engine are done).

the N26 or whatever is horrid IMO. And yes, they have been failing, early ones anyway - the timing system fails leaving you with a dead lump of aluminum and plastic. I think BMW fixed that issue on the newer ones - they still sound like arse though.

Seems like a lot of the new BMWs and Porsches sound like shit. Kinda disappointing the way they're going in general, even though they are better on paper.
