I read about that over at SpeedTV.com. Does this really surprise anyone? Given the season 'Fred' had with Stepneygate, pitlanegate, and whatever-else-gate, I am not even slightly surprised to see him go. Between the FIA fine and all the negative press circulating around the McLaren squad, I'm sure Ron couldn't wait to wash his hands of Alonso and move on. What I am surprised by is that he let him go sooner than expected. I figured Ron would keep Alonso contractually bound to his team until the last conceivable minute (a la Juan Pablo Montoya) - while other drivers swapped around to different teams - thus leaving Alonso to be relegated to a mid-field or back marker team. I guess Ron just couldn't stand having Fred around any longer so he cut him.

The good thing about this happening is that several other driver changes were hinging on what Alonso was going to do. Now that we know he's officially on the 'available' list, the post-season musical chairs between the drivers can commence. This should be good.

Ron Dennis apparently made it a point that Alonso, in breaking contract with Mclaren, will not be allow to race for a factory team. IE, NOT ferrari, not renault, bmw, toyota, or honda but Alonso in a Spiker.

Personally, id like to see a double world champion in a known bad car, should be cool!

Check out this link - it details some of the possible driver changes in the coming months....its an insightful read.

Right now it looks like Alonso's best hopes are either Renault or Red Bull Racing. However, since Ron doesn't want Fred driving for factory team, it appears most likely that he will go to RBR. If he does, who will his teammate be? Couthard or Webber? DC is 36 or 37 now so retirement seems almost eminent - on the other hand, Webber's manager is good 'ol Flavio so maybe he'll put him in a Renault next year. Really hard to tell at this point.....too many variables at the moment.
