Look at the tranny case and see if it's got an ATF Sticker.

it doesn't really matter, there's no difference between the two.. it was probably just cheaper for BMW to put ATF in the transmission. it will shift WAY better and likely last longer with gear oil in there instead. I would never put ATF in a manual transmission. Mine is a "green label" (ATF) and it's still purring at 260k with redline 70w80 MTL. :)

green lable is for synthetic fluid , red lable is for atf , no lable is regular mtl , that is what the stickers mean on the transmissions , and yes some do make a difference what fluid you put in them , red line mtl is synthetic so it will go in a green lable or a no lable trans just fine , if it has a red lable , I would personally put atf in it, but to each his own.

i stumbled onto this thread while doing some research on changing out my trans and dif fluids.

did the transmission last year with the redline and that was a nice improvement. finally got around to doing the dif fluid today (redline also).

                    1) old dif fluid really does smell like a butthole.

                    2) this was probably the best bang for the buck things i've done to the car yet, it was a DRASTIC improvement. i have no idea when the fluid was last changed, but it stank and was pretty dirty looking.

i had issues at low speeds where the car would buck and i had to be very gentle with the clutch to drive smoothly. post-redline the issues are completely gone.

i still need to do a guibo and CSB, but i'm very impressed with the redline fluids thus far.

So, say I put redline MTL in my Getrag 240, and the shifting has gotten considerably notchier/poorer feeling in general. Transmission has an "ATF" sticker on the side -- refill with redline ATF, or the 70w80?

I much prefer the royal purple trans fluid in my car. I had redline but it didn't feel great. Granted I have a somewhat poor g260 (in my opinion) so it could just be my trans.

mine is also a bit notchy until it gets warmed up, but once it does it's nice and smooth.

Mine doesn't get smoother as it warms up, if anything, it gets a bit worse. :( It use to be super smooth with whatever was in it, and now it actually gives me hassles going into gears.

^^ I may change to OEM stuff and see how that feels because I am not happy with the MTL, it shifted perfectly before and it seems much notchier
