Under the knife: My car's progress

This is going to be a thread that is daily updated with the progress of work on my car. This post marks day 1. For those that don't know, I am doing a 5 speed conversion in my car with all new wear parts, clutch kit, SSK, ltw flywheel, 4.10 LSD, a full brake overhaul with SS lines, rotors, pads, fluid, wear sensors, rebuilt and painted calipers, urethane control arm and subframe bushings, Sparco strut bar, iS lip with custom splitters, Ireland Engineering shorty headers, full 2.5" custom piping with no cats, Magnaflow single in/dual out muffler, and many, many more tidbits.

    Day 1:
I dropped off the flywheel at the machine shop to have it resurfaced/lightened.

I removed the control arm bushing brackets but just ripping the bushings apart with a screw driver. This left the inner ring stuck on the control arm. I used an adjustable C-clamp to work the ring off, that sucker is on their tight, but they both came off eventually.

Removed front brake calipers and tried to remove the rotors. I got 1 of the rotor set screws off, the other one stripped. It's being a bitch, and I have spent almost an hour trying different things to get it off. I ended up drilling the screw out, but BOTH rotors are rusted to the hubs, and I have to pick up some penetrating oil tonight and let it soak in overnight.

My headers arrived in the mail. They look great. I am going to sandblaster them, then paint them with 1,500* header paint and cure the paint in the oven. The headers are much, much lighter than stock ones. The primaries are also about 3/8" larger in diameter.

That concludes day 1. Jordan won't sticky this thread, so we've got to keep bumping it to keep it alive. If this interests you, please voice your support. Thanks!

    -T.J.

How much did you pay for those headers again? I want to hear about how they are once you get the engine going again, see if they are worth it.

That's my spare motor, my engine still in the car and running, but I won't have the headers installed until everything else is done... I paid $75 for them. There is a group buy for $200 going right now.

Are you reusing the rotors? Put one of the lugs back in (so the rotor doesnt fly away) and smack it with a BFH from behind. Done.

i highly recommend the BFH trick on rotors. don't waste your time with anything else. i spent lots of time with other methods. 5 minutes with a BFH took care of it all. as for the rotor locating bolts, if they're still giving you shit, drill a small hole in them and use a screw extractor with penetrating oil.

My uncle has this $350 snap-on tool, I call it the screw driver hammer thingy.......put the bit in, place it in the screw, and bang with a hammer......

I love using the BFH method......but customers get worried when i bring it out

Best tool ever for removing rotors. I've never stripped a locating bolt yet using this tool.
Not exactly worth it for the DIY'er but having a full shop at my disposal does have its perks...

I prefer big block of wood rather than hammer. I dunno why, just seems to work better.

Wont warp the shit out of the rotor (not as easily anyways)
