    The GT30 - My S54 Swapped E30 journey

    Hey R3v,

A lot has happened since I last checked in. I sold my M54 swapped touring in April 2021. My daughter was born shortly after that in May 2021! So life has been fun and hectic. BUT in the midst of all of these major life changes, I was able to find time to build another car.

Completing an S54 swap has been a long term E30 goal of mine. Ever since doing my first S50 swap back in 2011-2012, I immediately became a fan of 24v swapped E30's. Since then, i've done an S52, M54 and now the S54. To me, this is the ultimate iteration for the car. This is a true drivers car with no aids: throttle out! With that said...

Enter: The GT30. The idea behind the nomenclature "GT30" is that I wanted to build an E30 with a design intent of following Porsche 996/997 GT3 Architecture: NA, high revving, 6MT, track oriented, ALL BUSINESS!

    Heres a little back story.

I found the donor 1991 318iS on one of the E30 groups on Facebook. The ad simply said ' E30 brakes'. I click the ad, and find a very clean, straight DiamondSchwarz 318iS with an M50 swap, AST 4100 coilovers, Wilwood Massive Lee 300x32mm BBK, and a plethora of other track goodies for a bargain price....the ad had been up for a few days with ZERO comments and minimal views. I message the owner and its still available! The car is located in Montana, but is originally a PDX car. We work out a few logistics, and the seller agrees to deliver the car to Bellevue, WA for a minimal fee! SCORE!

Having purchased the car sight unseen, I was pleasantly surprised by its condition. The seller was very honest and transparent.

Fast forward a month, I come across an S54 E36 M3 for sale.

The car had been for sale for a few months with no movement. To me, that says alot considering most S54 swapped E36 command big bucks and typically don't stay on the market for too long...so whats wrong with it? The seller disclosed that the car was in an accident but was professionally fixed. I should have taken it to get a PPI done, but lesson learned.

The car had a VERY tweaked frame rail (roughly 1.5" off alignment), and held together by literal duct tape and zip ties. That day, I decided this was going to be a part out. Huge bummer, but you have to turn a negative situation into a positive.

    Commence tear down!

Brand new Z3M Harness. I didnt want to second guess any of the PO's work since he hacked up the original harness. So this gave me peace of mind.

Finally got a new tool box! And my at home work space is getting much more organized.

Light tear down of the S54. Pulled all cooling components, oil filter housing, sensors, etc for refreshing/resealing. Vanos was bullet proofed by Strictly BMW in Bellevue, WA, so I didn't have to tear into that.

New ARP Rod bolts and ACL bearings installed. Sooooo much easier on a stand! haha

obligatory engine bay shot prior to the Bayside Fabrication subframe install. You can see the E46 M3 FPR sitting on the firewall. My buddy made me a custom bracket that attaches directly to the frame rail utilizing an existing hole.

Custom FPR Bracket made by a buddy and myself utilizing a carbon filament that is heat and oil resistant.

This is great! Very excited on this build! My car has the nick name GT30 around the shop based on the same concept. :)

I was up above it, Now I'm down in it ~ Entropy - A Build thread.

                    You have my attention!

If you don't mind me asking what does Bayside Fabrication charge for the rear sump pan conversion and custom subframe?

It's nice to see other options since Arc Asylum is gone, I know there is another vendor in the UK, but this is always good to see.

                      Looking good so far!

I would like to have an S54 E36 one day.
It's a shame that one was totaled out, but at least the heart is going into a worthy chassis.

                      Subbed for updates

Unfortunate about the E36, but sometimes it's nice for a mistake to force you into a project... well, looking back on it at least lol

$1,500 for the works! IMO, well worth the money.
