    Slow and Proud - My 85' 318i

I realized I really needed to make a documentary blog about my E30 and how I'm building her. Here we have a M10 318i that I want to build into a nice little cruiser, She won't be fast by modern standards but it will be a lot of enjoyment to modify and fix up this old girl :)

    Build Progress:

    Drivetrain:

    • A Pair Of 325i/325e Disc Brake Trailing Arms (Not installed, Waiting to buy a LSD and the necessary components to install)

    Brakes:

    Engine Shenanigans:

    • Replaced Valve Cover Gasket.

    Suspension/Wheels:

•Front Lower Suspension Refresh (Story Attached)

    Interior:

    •VDO Continental Head Unit.

    Bodywork And Cosmetics:

•Rear Bumper needs work (Story Attached)

She is a trooper for being a 40+ year old New England Survivor, However we didn't get here without some drama. Time for the story.

Ever since I was a mire lad in my early years, I always admired small and compact cars, Cars like the E30 and AW11 MR2. Though it'd take a few years and a (LOT) of patience, This girl fell into my lap and I knew she was right for me. The car was properly looked after by someone who owned a body shop and restored Vintage Cars from the 30's and onwards including this one. Diving into this, Most of the bodywork is good but there's still a few areas needing some love. The previous owner replaced the driver's side fender and rust proofed the floorpan/Undercarriage (Thank God) but he simply ran out of time. However the car did run okay and held a steady idle so after properly looking over and ensuring it was good enough for me. I scooped it up and drove 4 hours from Vermont To Rhode Island.

I feel shame for being an idiot but:

The very next day, As I was driving from an Insurance office to the DMV. I didn't realize that this car had no ABS, It was an early model and therefore as I attempted to brake and downshift from 50-30. My front brakes locked up and I accidentally sent my girl into a curb, Destroying the front right tie rod and my wheel.

Yeah this wasn't my proudest moment...
After waiting for an hour for a tow truck to come and drop my car off at my house. The car was going to need tie-rods and a refresh of the lower suspension components so there it was, She sat in the back of my driveway, Disappointed and ashamed of my actions like a mother who has to ground their child because they broke their beloved vase. Now luckily I didn't give up, Sure it was heart wrenching but I picked myself up again and sourced the parts to bring to my mechanic (No tools to do it myself unfortunately) and eventually I towed her to my mechanic to replace the parts. However as we were pushing the car into the shop and onto the lift, One of the mechanics accidentally ripped off the rear bumper off one of the bumper shocks because he was trying to pull the car by it's bumper.

    Parts Came and was installed:

Now thankfully we discovered that one of the motor mounts was hanging on for dear life, Replaced and done

In all seriousness once the car was back on the road and I had humbled myself in all aspects, I began to actually focus on finishing up registration and fixing small things here and there. The first thing that was bothering me is the squeak coming from the engine bay, All aspects led to believe it was the alternator belt but after replacing the belt, Cleaning up the Pulleys and checking everything. It was coming to the conclusion that it just wouldn't stop squeaking, Though it did get much quieter. After Christmas and a dead battery replacement:

I'd manage to fix the car's alignment and score a pair of 325 Trailing arms for the disc brake conversion in mid January, Bought a car cover for her and began diving into this website for everything I can learn about this car. I know a couple issues to fix and luckily it won't be hard!

    Now!
I can't wait to install disc brakes and a LSD once Spring rolls around. I had also installed a new radio which I documented in my 2nd discussion. Works like a charm.
The car is being daily driven in the winter and Yes I am taking every measure to ensure the car is washed regularly and inspected. Speaking of which!

Future plans for the next 6 months.

Fix Rust on the tailgate area and around the passenger tail light. Some on the bottom on the front middle grill piece.
    Install a Limited Slip
Do a refresh of the suspension and brakes.
Get a good set of wheels and tires.
    General Upkeep.

This is hopefully done, Thanks for reading till the end! More work will be done once I'm able to cram it into my schedule! Till next time!

Love to see these survivors! What ratio are you looking for on the rear LSD?

what happened with the rear bumper being yanked off? Also the pics are small, how are you attaching them?

BTW the front struts are also smaller, you should add the later ones for the front and upgrade everything together

I'm practically stalking the for sale section as I'm Looking for a 3:73 - 4:27 Gear Ratio LSD since I'm mostly driving on back roads and would love to have more acceleration! As for the rear bumper, The current situation is that the bumper was accidentally ripped off one of the bumper shocks and now it just hangs with just one. I plan to order "The High Dive" Bumper kit along with stuff to correct the rust spots she has on the rear. Thanks for the advice!

All the charm of the M10 318i relies on it being light. Be careful "upgrading" a bunch of stuff and adding 150 lbs. in the mean time. Keep the wheels and tires light. I would find a 3.91 168MM small case LSD. When I tried a 188MM 3.73 in my M10 318i, I could feel the drag on the engine. Upon returning the 3.91 open diff "power" was back on like a light switch. 105 HP will require everything to be light. Have you noticed that passengers make a difference in performance? Don't get me wrong - there is no E30 like the M10 318i on dirt roads - I loved mine and wish I had another. If I did, I would do everything in my power to keep it at stock weight or less. Advance timing as much as possible without detonation and back off a bit - record where you have it there - keep an ear on it until perfect. Another recipe that worked well on my M10 318i dirt road car was the following: BMW 2002tii flywheel and 228MM pressure plate + clutch, 2002tii cast iron exhaust manifold, E21 2.0 M10 down pipe and E30 325e cat-back muffler. The combo gave a bit more flow and better torque. I had adjustable Konis on the front which were great. Loved that car!

Awesome advice! Weight is everything on this car so I'm trying to make the car as simple as it can be. I'm looking for a good wheel that's lighter than the bottlecaps (14 pounds) so I'm keeping my eye out. Also Yes the LSD is going to have to be small because reading into others experiences including yours, Her rear subframe probably won't accept the medium case (correct me I'd I'm wrong).

Between researching parts and seeing what the car needs vs wants, I'm putting together a list of requirements for the rear end like Rust repair. Disc Brakes and The LSD, It'll also be wise to replace the bushings anyways. The M10 is only getting a street cam with updated valve springs and guides along with regular maintenance since I do want to put something else in the engine bay eventually!

A medium case will fit in there, but I would make sure that the driveshaft slip joint is free of rust and reset to the replacement differential.

Finally had the chance to clean her up after 2 weeks of daily driving, When it's time to swap the diff then I'm definitely taking a look at the slip joint and the gas tank as well. You can't go wrong with inspecting it.

(Relay Shenanigans and passenger window motor.)

Ah so what's new? Well for starters, My car has recently decided to kill itself in terms of a "Starts But Dies Immediately". We have fuel pressure and we have no leaks shockingly. Spark is good but she has idle issues (that's an entirely different situation I gotta look into) Alternator is charging and battery is getting recharged as we speak. However I decided to check the voltage for terminal 87 and 30 for the fuel pump relay and it turns out that the relay isn't making good contact at all, Why? Because it speaks for itself.

Jesus Christ... It's impressive the car was able to send current to this thing, I also checked the fuse box for the fuel pump fuse and that's fine. Although the A/C fuse is completely melted. (Probably why the A/C does not work in the first place.) Anyways it took all of three seconds to understand that this relay finally bit the dust and as a result my car refuses to run. While I wait for the new relay to come in the mail, I still need to send my passenger window motor to a rebuilder. New motors are no longer an option and this motor works but it's seized.

Once I'm able to get this rebuilt and everything back together in the passenger door? We should have working windows again.

Then it's onto repairing the rust in the trunk area. That's it for now.

I would proactively pop a coolant temperature sensor in the car especially if it has a 1-wire oxygen sensor. My 1984 318i started dying when it was warm, but always starting up after it cooled off. The coolant temperature sensor solved the problem.

That is a great answer! It wasn't the coolant temperature sensor but I have returned from the dead with a lot of things i've done. (Was so busy fixing issues with the car.)

First thing is that I finally got her to run again, It turnt out that the ECU had crapped out and I had no idea it did so, It wasn't until i discovered this video that finally explained what was happening to my car: https://youtu.be/XELbHwkolys?si=zEOAZRnvLuBnPGQ7

it took a lot of time and diagnosing but thankfully she's alive again.

Second thing, In that time frame. I decided to overhaul the fuel system and do some long overdue maintenance for the girl, I can't upload a lot of photos so I'll put the most important ones: I put in new injectors after finding out the original ones leaked like mad and couldn't be rebuilt. New fuel hoses, A coolant system flush and new thermostat, New Cap and Rotor, New Spark Plugs. You get the picture, She's running better but the only thing that leaves me to do is to overhaul the idle control system. (It's notorious and my car got affected by it too)

Overall She's been behaving well as of this week and apart from one small hiccup with loose battery terminals, I'll wash her up and take her to her first show or meetup. She deserves it.

Also forgot to mention! I also installed crank windows for shits and giggles, The power windows failed on both sides and I needed a temporary (permanent) solution to my windows. I believe i saved like 2 pounds? Click image for larger version

Thanks! Managed to find someone who was selling a whole manual window kit on ebay, However luckily my car is giving me signs on what to fix next before i plan to trip this car.

My next step is to track down why my engine was trying to overheat, Thankfully I fixed the temperature gauge so when she got to 3/4 before i nursed her home and let her cool down. I noticed a leak from the lower radiator hose where it connects to the radiator and the water pump sounds like it's on it's way out with the engine having a rattle noise when it's idling. I have no idea when this water pump was changed out so in all good favor to service the cooling system further. BTW Happy birthday to me lol.

                            I will update with news!

Do you have a link or part number for the window crank?

I had overheating with my M10 too. I replaced the fan clutch and radiator shroud.
