You could choose to lean it out a bit at cruise for slightly better fuel economy if you want. Its not necessary though.
It never hurts to double check the trigger settings with a timing light. At least you know you are not way off though now!Leave a comment:

I'll have to go over those settings... I know the spark settings are right but not sure about the decoder ones. Their example is one tooth off mine for a couple of the settings.
EDIT: That AFR table is going to be a little rich during cruising won't it? I have my table set so that in cruising the EGO correction is trying to keep it at around 16.Leave a comment:

My wife not even let me have tarbo

So, I have some good news about trigger settings. I still don't get the MS trigger settings, but you guys had it right. The trigger angle is supposed to stay at 60 and has nothing to do with where tooth #1 is in relation to TDC.
You use this spreadsheet to enter the information in the wheel decoder:
Look in the manual here under wheel decoder:
Learn something new every day. The documentation in the program could certainly be more clear....but whatever.
Sorry for the confusion :loco: Since I led you on a goose chase, I translated some of my tables into things that may be useful for you to try in relation to cranking
Crank settings for a 3.2ms req_fuel:

Afterstart Enrichment:

AFR Targets:

Timing:

Start with the cranking and afterstart settings and see how that works. If it starts better, then update the AFR table. Use the VE analyser tool to autotune your VE table.
If you want to try the timing map, I'd pull a few degrees out of it across the board (take 3 deg or so out) and try that out slowly upping it a degree at a time.Leave a comment:

hah! she must understand all things turbo related must come as first priority!Wish I wasn't remodeling my house... :(
Have no time for car... maybe when the wife goes back to work next week. She's on mandatory vacation (one week must be taken yearly) and I don't have time for any auto projects with the list of honey-do's she's throwing at me. LOLLeave a comment:

My timing light is a non-adjustable cheapy. Im sure whatever you got will be just fine!Leave a comment:

yes, I would assume it wouldnt be more than 10 degrees thats why I kind of believe 8.
If one tooth is 6 degrees (like we established earlier) I should be able to figure out the settings pretty quickly.
RIP to my super OG snapon timing light. It got run over about a year ago. Sure wish I had it now. I went down and picked up a budget one for 30 bucks at HB. It has good reviews. hopefully it worksLeave a comment:

You mean timing advance during cranking?
I have mine set to 10deg which is a fairly standard setting.Leave a comment:

I need to know what the stock ignition timing for this engine is. Ive looked all over and all I can find is 8 degrees advance. If this is correct we can use that as a start for settings.
In other news I marked my teeth up so I can see whats going on while cranking. I might have to plug in my stock ecu, then crank. Who knows. #1 on my list right now is to get the timing dead on.

Well, I would see what some MS experts have to say as to why your car can run decently well being so far off. Your fuel seems really really high to me which leads me to believe its compensating for being injected at the wrong time in the cycle. Your car will run with really retarded ignition, it just will be lethargic.
I will try and look through both your tunes and send you something that you can test out.
I have the front of my engine torn down now for repair, so ill snap a picture of the toothed wheel set at TDC so people can see I'm not talking crazy :)
The M42 gets very little love, so it would be nice to get a solid MS config for people to work up from. Also, my project moves slow, so I can keep busy by getting others sorted out :)
Maybe one of you can start a thread on the MS forum to get some assistance.Leave a comment:

I am going to start a new project and start from scratch with the "correct" trigger/timing settings and go from there. We'll see how it goes. Won't be a for a few days though as it takes forever to build the tune up from scratch using the megamanual as a you go.
LOL wish I was smarter.
We are in this together. Im going to have to do the exact same thing it looks like. I cant believe my car made almost 270 whp like this

Once I get my car idling ill send you my basesLast edited by Dj Buttchug; 11-12-2013, 05:47 PM.Leave a comment:

Everything is supposed to be built up from the trigger setting, so I would just build a config up from scratch. Obviously you aren't interested in doing that so we just need to figure out where the problem is.
When you change the trigger setting that much it going to impact both your fuel and timing. When you get it out of warmup mode, does the AFR read lean or rich?
Hopefully someone who has experience with MS and this engine can chime in. I do find it weird Derek in the thread I linked was having issues with the correct settings as well. Not sure why he was or how it was resolved.
I agree. Im not going to move on further until I can start and idle the engine on the correct trigger settings.
by the time Im out of warmup and idling Im at about 12.5 to 13.0 AFR. I've considered scrapping the whole tune and starting completely over, but I haven't done that yet...
Im not sure what to do at this point. Ive considered calling up my tuner and asking for help... After all I did pay him over $800 in dyno time to make this work, but even then I am unsure because my car NEVER started or idle'd properly with his tuning.
ugh.Leave a comment:
