Yeah I know, but the M5x coils aren't much different. Its still pretty easy to tell if the settings are out of whack. The M5x are easier as there is a lot more info on them!

6ms for bosch coils is a rediculious amount of dwell. Why would you possibly need that much...especially at start? You need maybe half that at peak torque!

yep. I swapped out one vb921 when it fried. Now I just have to swap over the rest.

Ordered new from diyautotune @ $9 each.

    Thanks for the input guys.

here is what im dealing with. Im on MS V3.5.7 This is a much older version but its still very usable.
As you can tell, its clear which driver failed. When this happens it also shorts out the ignition coil so I will need to replace that as well.

Ill load up my cranking settings soon.

There is a separate setting for cranking dwell, sounds like that one might be too high for long cranks I think by default it is around 6ms which would be fine for normal starts.

Is this an older MS setup it sounds like you had vb921s and those went NLA about 5 years ago, are they all plastic or a metal base?

Is the cold start issue a tuning problem? Sounds like it could put extra strain on the charging system and starter as well if it is long enough to fry the drivers.

Did not know they made updated drivers with failsafes built in... kinda nice. What version of MS are you running?

EDIT: ^What he said. Can check my dwell and startup settings against yours if you'd like.
that would be great! also yes, the new updated drivers from diy are suppose to shutdown before they toast off.

I don't know how MS does its parameters for cold start, but if you post them up I could compare to mine (VEMS).

What is your coil dwell set to? A value too high will fry your drivers.

Im dealing with a cold start issue and I cant get a decent start up with out extensive cranking. hot starts are almost perfect but cold ones sucks. If I crank to long it overloads my coil drivers and they fry. I ordered the updated ones that have a failsafe so this wont happen anymore.

Ive been driving around in economy mode at 8 psi. haha. All this work and im not even using all my boost.

    wtf was i thinking.

And how long did it take you to figure out it was the drivers? ;)

I wish I could shove 16psi into my m42 but the little turbo I'm running bails out around 12psi. Even then it falls on its face (the turbo) above 5500rpms.

same here. I have my setup made but not installed.

Will see how it goes after that. Im about 40 hp short of my goal right now. I think I can get there on 91 pump with a better intake and tb.
