got the engine/tranny out today. this was a LOT of work to do by myself. A friend came over to help me balance the engine once I had it on the hoist, but I did everything else myself.. I'm beat!
also got the pedal cluster and master cylinder installed. just need to figure out how the springs attatch to the pedals. anyone willing to take a pic of me, on an airbag car? mine came in peices so I have no idea where they go.
the automatic trannies last stand:
much better:
this thing is heavy!
what a mess
free at last!
anyone want a free tranny?
and I'm spent..Comment

I bet you could get something for an auto ix tranny and transfer case couldnt you?Back to my roots

And I thought auto trannies were big. :o
ix's are HUGE.Comment

not selling the transfer case.. it has a new chain and gears inside, and a good VC. the auto tranny I'll put up for free, but it'll probably end up going to the crusher when I send off the hulk of my parts car. I can always use the tcase parts later down the road if I need to.
and yeah, the last foot or so of the transmission is actually the transfer case. it is a bit longer than the 5 speed though, and definitely heavier!Comment

Damn, how long is your driveshaft? A couple inches??? LOL
Nice job, man!
I know how hard it is to remove an engine on your own, done it twice now. It's doable, but you have to move around a lot! I had a load balancer though, so that made it a bit easier. It also helps to twist the chains, this keeps the engine from wanting to spin (if you rna into that issue)
Damn you work fast. I, for some reaosn, have never been able to work that fast, and I know what to do for the most part! I guess I just take everything slow. lol- Sean HayesComment

small update, worked on cleaning parts/putting together the subframe while I waited for my replacement ring.
nasty and yucky old stuff:
nice and clean new stuff:
cleaned up 5 speed (not perfect, but good enough for me):
got the motor together this morning, just put on the oil pan.. I just need to bolt on the head, clean up the intake, swap injectors, and change seals on tranny/tcase. looks like it will be going into the car tomorrow, should have it running by sunday. :)Comment

nope, which means I'll miss 3 this season. :(Originally posted by DigitalwaveNo autocross then huh? You'll get'em next time.
I just hit another snag too! the studs that were put on by the exhaust shop that did my headers were all too long. I wanted to swap them out for the right length ones because the only way to get the headers off with these was to pull the head or the motor... but they also cross threaded most of them, and one was so bad it broke off inside the head. so tomorrow I get to waste ~4 hours drilling it out and retapping the hole, plus I have to borrow a drill and buy another drill bit/tap.. ugh!
at least the motor is together, head is on, timing belt is on.. and no more interference motor for me :)Comment

did quite a bit today, fixed the broken stud, changed seals on tranny, changed gaskets/seals on diff, etc. I'm planning on dropping it in tomorrow afternoon, hopefully all goes smoothly from here out..
also test fitted the stock shifter vs a z3 2.8, the reduction in throw is massive. hopefully it fits!
stock:
z3 2.8/3.0:
figured I'd get some shots of the guts of my transfer case:
