    3.0L M20 E30 Touring - Tuning

    Hello fellas!

Its been a long while since I posted here (couldn't log in for some reason). I have pretty much finished my E30 Touring build. Monday the 15th. I have my first ever dyno day. My local tuner has not used tuner studio before and has not tuned a NA M20 stroker before.

He asked for me to bring him some other maps from similar setups to gage comparisons if I can find any. Trouble is, I am struggling to find that online.

Could someone help me out with this?

    Engine specs are-

Metric mechanic rally 86mm pistons 10:5:1
    Molnar 135mm rods
    M52b28 84mm
cyl head has 1mm oversized valves
    Schrick 284/272 cam
    24lb injectors
    Fancy valve springs
bav auto long tube headers straight through to a stromung muffler
running MS2 with IAT and MAP sensor

There is a bunch more done, but thats all for what i think may be needed to compare to what others are running. Let me know if there is more I can answer or contribute!

Thanks so much for your help guys! This site's been such an amazing resource!

Do you know specs on if block or head was machined? One day I would like to do a similar build. Besides +1mm valves was any head work done? Everything I've read says that is where the horsepower is hiding.

I got the minimum removed when the cylinder head and block were decked. My pistons were 2mm larger then stock.

I didn't feel comfortable porting my cylinder head as I didnt feel i could do it as well as bimerheads/metric mechanic.

Its a street car and I didn't want to fuss with it to much.

Going to do ITBs likely next summer and then I will send the head to get fully ported by a proven pro

I do not have anything unfortunately. I’m sure Jake could write a base map to get OP close and/or remote tune, at a cost

Noted! I have a 'break in tune' running right now. It's doing great, although my advance is down low to be safe. Runs quite rich.

I feel confident it's a good basis. Was just curious what others maps look like vs mine now so my tuner had a mild idea before hand.

Pretty excited. Can't remember the dyno type, but it would be nice to get above 210whp.

Awesome- it will be great to have more M20 stroker data! You’ll have to add your results to the M20 Dyno thread.

If it’s not a Dynojet I wouldn’t put too much stock in the numbers unless they have a baseline M20b25 run you can compare to.

My 3.1L car didn’t make 200whp but had an insane torque curve and felt/sounded incredible on the street.

So here are my results. Seems my intake is quite restrictive. I am going to install ITBs soon enough so this doesn't hurt my feelings.

It was run on a dynojet dyno.

All of the data I've seen is that the stock intake is capable of ~235whp. ITBs will definitely pick up up top, though.

If you look at the M20 dyno thread, I have info there on a few 3L M20s that made similar numbers. Yours is closer to a 2.9 than a 3.0. You've got less stroke and more bore, they've got more stroke and less bore. The RHD ITBs were worth 20whp up top over the stock intake on one of the below S52 crank, stock bore 3L m20s with a 272 cam.

The two posts I have in there on M20 stroker data:

Do you have an adjustable cam gear? Multiple members have found solid gains across the board by retarding the 284/272 cam 4 to 6 degrees or so.

Thank you for your reply! This is my first experience with a dyno and I am curious about if the numbers of the specific dyno hold accountability vs others.

My injectors were not topping out. It just seems to be the intake that's holding me back.

Another thing to note is it was 28C in the shop when doing pulls

Anything you guys think I am missing?

I do have an adjustable cam gear. I am going to retard the timing this morning, but do I not need to bring it back to the dyno to get the car to run correctly if I make the adjustment?

                              Update!

So I retarded the cam 4° and while the top end was more potent. I really struggled to find the torque I wanted. It's a street car, so torque is king in my world.

I then advanced 4° to good results, but settled with 6°.

The character of the motor is almost how I would want it.

It hauls really well right through to 7K. Think I will let it sit from here until I finalize my ITB setup.

I am starting fresh, input on this subject would he awesome. Hearing not so good results from shops i trust with RHD ITBs on a m20. Should I build my own? Or choose another option?
