indeed, but your friend really needs to lower that thing! mine sat that tall when I got it, I've lowered it about 6" since then as a result of re-doing my suspension, it may go a bit lower yet! we shall see.

I've been making a mess out of my sub frame lately because I'm tired of being bottomed out all the time... the worst part is, my car isn't even low, it's just low-ish. anyways, raising the control arms so the ball joints to max out and snap, not sure what to do about the steering, and I'm going to run shorter struts.

hopefully all this work will give my car the ability to lay frame, not sure if/how much I'd use that ability, but I want it.

it's a bit hack-tastic right now, but I think I can manage to make it all look right once I brace it all up.

ha, thanks guise! not much progress at all since I posted those pics, but I have a couple goodies related to stance on the way, going to leave it at that so you will all have a bit of a surprise at the end. If it's not too freakishly cold this afteroon, I hope to at least finish the hacking on my sub frame and maybe at least template some of the bracing it will need. My biggest problem will probably be the steering, I was thinking an easy way to fix the angle on the steering would be to convert the rod ends to heims, drill out the steering arms, and space them down a bit, thus making them flatter and less angry at full lock. anyone know of any after market rod ends/heims for stock E21 tie rods? kind of a long shot, but minus whale ask. If I can't find any thing after market, which will probably be the case, I need to try and figure out my thread pitch and see if anything will fit (they need to be female heims)... yea, everything about the suspension on an E21 sucks.

love the work your doing. makes me wish i had an E21 to hack on as well. regarding your plans for rod ends, I doubt you will comeup with something with the right thread as tie rods are genrally fine. But perhaps make some thing with the fine thread of the tierod on one end and a suitable thread on the other to accept a male rod end.

quit waiting and cut them! if you want to get semi low like my car, you'll maybe want to wait though, E21's are not "low friendly". notice, I only stated that my car has only been semi low. if it were really low, I'd be scraping that thick material the cross walks are marked with like my friend's audi.

E30guydownunder, I see what you're saying. unless I end up cutting and re-tapping my tie rod ends, I think they'd end up too long that way. I appreciate your creative input though, and that may be what I have to do. I have found female metric rod ends, I just need to attempt to find my thread pitch now, I has an idea for that.

anyways, got lots done on the sub frame tonight.

the card board is templates of stuff I still need to add in

"cad board" as a friend of mine calls it.

putting these back on, on the other side, I managed to cut everything without having to remove them... I was being more creative.

                    lil supportive dingie.

I don't know, might not hold up...

                      mostly welded up:

control arm angle at the height I was riding at, pretty damn good. I plan to keep the approximate height I had, I think it will handle the bit of up travel I will achieve just fine.

added a plate on the bottom of the sub frame so I have some beefage to rub off instead of digging into the tinny sub frame material like I was.

in these last two pics, you can kind of see the added supports that were only templates in earlier pics.

in the process of trying to figure out which struts to get, so between that and other things going on in my life, progress is a little slowed. with the subframe out of the way, I think the future for the car is looking good though.

had the exhaust off the replace a faulty U joint, so I added some uglyness to it where it was all scraped up to prevent wearing through it. I rarely scrape it besides some parking lot entries and most speed bumps (which I have to go over in a strange manner)

Bought some struts for a toyota Mr. 2 cause they are shorter than stock:

if you can't tell which strut is which, you need to be slapped.

shortened next to unshortened, I took 2-1/4 off each housing in the end.

one of the struts mocked up with the cap dealie

you may have been wondering why i took 2-1/4" off the housings when the struts were a bit over 3.5" shorter... well, these 1-5/8" spacers made of some .120 wall 1.5" DOM (that I scored for free!) should explain that well. going to smooth out the side that goes against the strut. I made them a bit bigger than need be so I'd be sure to have enough threads available on the cap type dealies to really be able to get the strut nice and tight in the housings. I fully intend to weld these up and maybe install them tomorrow morning.

oh, cutting most of the spring perch off too.

                              thank you sire.

                              strut housings are done!

I also got rid of the sharp edge on the DOM spacers, they fit the bottom of the struts pretty well now. getting excited. my biggest hold up now is the steering parts that I'm waiting for.

PS - I want those wheels back so bad. They fit so well on the Jetta.
