Josh,
Thanks for posting the update. I have been watching this with great interest, as I will be dropping an M50 in my car veddy, veddy soon. Please post back with your results and final overall setup (I figure you probably would have anyway, but I wanted to make sure you knew that there are people anxiously awaiting updates)!
Cheers!Leave a comment:

The new Dynomax got here yesterday, and just from looking inside it, I think it's going to make a huge difference in the sound. I'm so anal about this, I actually contacted Dynomax directly and told them exactly what my system was like, what it was comprised of, and what it sounded like. I ended up getting the single 3" in/dual 2.5" out, with the 13" can length.
The guy I talked to at Dynomax said that even with the large pipes and the Magnaflow in the middle, the larger 22" probably would have made my car sound almost stock, which I don't want. I don't mind somewhat loud, and a good, deep tone, I just don't want it as loud as it is with the Flowmaster. Both him and the guy at the exhaust shop said the Flowmaster is actually making the system louder and raspier than it would be with another muffler.
So it goes back in to the exhaust shop Monday, and should emerge with a MUCH better sounding exhaust note. Something funny that I noticed, when I knock on the Flowmaster with my knuckles, I get a very distinct almost "bell-tone" ring. Same thing on the Dynomax, I just get a good, thick-metal THUD.Leave a comment:

I have never used a 22" dynomax so i don't know but i would guess that your car will sound stock with one that big. I have a '62 International Scout with a 152ci 4 cyl and have a 13" Dynomax and a side exit. The whole system is 7-8 feet long. It is throaty sounding but not at all loud. My 911 has a 14" magnaflow only and it is loud, louder than i want a daily to be (as a reference). FWIW, Bursch uses the 13" Dynomax on their 911 systems and they sound awesome even as the only muffler. Then again, the Dynomax is not solely dependent on muffler volume like a straight thru muffler is,so its possible the bigger one would not be way quieter than the small one. It would probably be easier to change to the smaller one later as opposed to the opposite.
Your exhaust shop should be able to advise you.

When you do go poly mounts. Get the revshift Bue 24v swap mounts and blue tranny mounts. They're awesome.Leave a comment:

I measured that, it will fit fine under there. The muffler area under the E30 is quite large. The fitment issue I was worried about is that the inlet on the current Flowmaster is in the center, and so is the inlet of the 13" Dynomax. The inlet of the 22" Dynomax is offset to one side.Leave a comment:

The only "reworking" he would have to do is cut the pipe back a bit farther. I would be more worried about the muffler fitting under the car more then anything. Might want to measure the area where the muffler goes to see if it will fit ok.Leave a comment:

I just went with what Blunt recommended, he said he'd used the 535i green mounts on all his swap cars.Leave a comment:

I've seen all kinds of stuff with motor mounts, 2 green, 2 black, upside down mounting, etc. What is the best way to do it? 2 green? Do you know why 2 green is better than the stock e28 m5 1 green 1 black set-up?Leave a comment:

Yep, those are stock rubber E30 trans mounts, and my motor mounts are E28 535i green mounts.
I was going to go urethane tranny mounts, but that pair was basically new. When the time comes to replace them, I'll probably go urethane, along with the motor mounts.
Ordering the new muffler tomorrow, but I'm still trying to decide if I should get the 13" Dynomax or the 22". After driving the car a bit today, all of the loudness that is really bothering me the most is up high and at WOT, at idle it really doesn't sound terrible, it's just too loud. There's only a $10 difference, but it's also a 9" difference, and I'm worried he's going to have to totally rework the piping going back to the muffler to make it fit, and make the tips come out right.Leave a comment:

E21 trans mounts are stiffer than the stock E30 ones. But both will work.Leave a comment:

In the "DOHC Swap Basics" sticky, it lists "E28 m5 or two 320i trans mounts/ which are cheaper." So do I just use stock E30 trans mounts?Leave a comment:

Those are regular E30 trans mounts with Mike's trans brace (should have been pink). The E28 mounts people use for 24V swaps are motor mounts, not trans mounts.Leave a comment:
