Just DupliColor gloss black. The intake manifold doesn't even really get that hot, no need for high-heat paint there.
Gotcha. I've done painted engine covers using standard auto paint, but nothing directly bolted to the motor. I was thinking heat transfer would be higher with the intake manifold.
Props josh you did a great job, especially not being eduacted in the body work area! and your right you will never see the area that the guys is talking about. what primer did you end up using?
Pulled my stock steering rack out tonight in order to swap for an E36 rack, and found my inner and outer tie rods and ball joints to all be in perfect condition (as they should be, I only replace them a little over a year ago!)
I know now that everyone is going to have a shit-fit about the fact that I'm spraybombing the engine bay, but that's what I'm doing.

Spray them with real paint, not from a can. Thats just ghetto.
Not everyone can afford to spend $500-700 to have JUST the engine bay painted, and I probably wouldn't, anyway. Maybe someday when I get the whole car repainted.

rattle bomb can be affective, when use properly. I like that you used black as a primer, that way no that it will happen but if it were to get chipped it would be black underneath. though I would get more of a reply on my complements, but i geuss youve just never been fond of me,
Not the case at all, I've hardly been on today and it's been a long-ass day. So glad I have a 3-day weekend ahead of me. I have no issues with you at all.
And yes, rattle-can jobs can do just fine, depending on the application. Inside the engine bay will see no exposure to the elements and other dangers. Proper prep is everything, and I do plenty of coats of everything when I paint, primer, paint and clear.
Started doing some more cleaning on the underside of the car today, now that the rack is out, I can clean the rest of the front subframe. There is something utterly disgusting and strangely satisfying about removing 20-something years of road grime and oil sludge from the underside of your car with a putty knife. I like watching it come off in huge flat chunks.
I've seen some great work come from a spray can. It's all about prep, the process and the finish. Make sure to wet sand the color and each coat of clear. The nice thing about the engine bay is it's not a flat panel like on your exterior so minor imperfections won't catch your eye.

Yeah, I think it's going to come out just fine.
Front subframe is now completely cleaned top and bottom, and all of the lines are removed from the old steering rack, ready to be cleaned and everything transferred over to the new one. The new one needs a little cleaning, but will be ready to install once I paint the bay.
I'm running out of things to work on before I'm ready for everything to start going back in! All I need to do still is remove/clean/reinstall the booster, and figure out where I'm going to hide all my wiring!

Spray can can look great with patience. When i used to paint guitars you could make it look like a mirror if you wanted. The concern i'd have is durability and how long it lasts with spray clear
