You are correct. Vanos and Non vanos MAF's are very different.

So I was just changing the 2 metal o-rings behind the timing chain tensioner at the front of the head, get the first big one changed out, no sweat. Second outer one was a little harder, had to get my channel locks around the larger part, and get a socket on the smaller hex cap at the front. Break it loose, start threading the cap off. As soon as it gets to the end of the threads, the spring comes rocketing out with the hex cap on top...

... hits me SQUARE in the left nut.

Doesn't sound like it felt very good.

I absolutely hate that feeling. When that happens, not only do I feel like I'll barf, I feel as if I'm about to pass out from a drop in blood pressure.

When I first put the thermostat back in, I put the new o-ring on the outside of it, like it's shown there, where it was when I pulled it out. So I put the new o-ring on, put on the gasket and put the housing back on, it smashed the gasket out because it was sitting on the o-ring.

So I got a new gasket today, and when I test-fitted the gasket, it still sits on top of the o-ring, and the same thing would have happened again if I had bolted the housing down on top of it. So I pulled the thermostat back out, and put the o-ring behind it, the thermostat on top of that, the gasket in place, and bolted the housing down. Everything fit perfectly. So... WTF???

Is the o-ring SUPPOSED to go into the opening in the head first, then the thermostat, then the gasket, then the housing? Because if I do it the other way, the gasket does not fit, and the housing will just smash the gasket out again, because it's sitting on the o-ring and not flush against the head. Will it leak, or be otherwise affected if I leave it installed as it is now?
shame about that gasket. Hope you got it fixed

Yeah, it looks fine now. I'm pretty sure part of the fault must have been with that first gasket, because when I started to tighten it down with the new one, it started to push it out again, but it wasn't torn like the first one was. Who knows, I could have put a little tear in it myself, that material is super fragile. But that new o-ring that came with the kit was definitely thicker than the existing one, too. All kind of wierd.

I appreciate you getting me the new one so fast. I could have very well fucked it up myself, let me know if you want me to pay you for it.

Nothing much to update recently, finally got my outer tie rod lock washers today, now I can put my front suspension back together!

Hoping to pick up a set of RTABs/RSFBs soon, then I just need to get my diff installed, and I can put the rear subframe back in, too.
