It's probably the splines that strip. There are some solutions for that as far as I know.

          Some bad news guys
Car caught fire shortly after finishing the maintenance, tune, fabrication.

Sitting at a stop light getting ready to turn and it looks like some sort of oil line failure caught fire around the headers

Currently sitting with the insurance company as they try to give and estimate for the value to possibly total her out

Very upset after putting all that work into her. Trying to figure out if I should buy back, try to part her out, or try to rebuild her

          Sad day

I'm going to create a video from the footage of what happened when the dust settles but until then enjoy her final dino sheet before the disaster

Sorry for what happened! This must be every car enthusiast's worst nightmare ...
From what is visible in the pictures, it's repairable and personally I'd try to rebuild.
Wish you the best possible outcome for you in this situation.

Why would it be totaled? you need a new hood I'd guess, and plastic bits. it's not a $1500 car. I'd fight to keep it a clean title.

Rebuild for sure and focus on managing the heat. It appears that your down pipe is naked which will throw a lot of heat, same with your turbo manifold if it's the same way. Consider having the down pipe and exhaust manifold ceramic coated and use heat sleeves on any wiring that's in a trouble area. A heat shield for the engine wiring and your windshield wiper res behind the down pipe wouldn't hurt either.

Serious bummer, but my vote is one you can come back from.

My only concern would be the metal of the strut tower copping the heat but I don't think it would be hot enough to affect it, by the look of everything else.
                  Fix it, it'll be fine.

Lots of rubber/plastic around the fire that looks untouched, doesn't look like it got too hot.

Are you sure it was an oil line and not the valve cover gasket? Saw this on Clapped Out Bimmers a few weeks back in some thread about sacrificing E36s to the fire gods or something.

Possibly, but from the few pictures, it doesn't look like much burned at all.

I've been grieving in an unhealthy way for the past year.
Basically decided to take on a huge restoration of a 135i BMW that has pretty much been a disaster and money pit
Every time I say to myself I'm going to stop, I think of how I let my old E30 girl down and push forward :(
