From what I've read the M rack versus a non-M is just smaller fluid passages which give it a bit heavier feel. As far as versus a z3 rack, I havent driven an e30 with a z3 rack but I have driven an e36m3 with one and its super nice for spirited driving. I can imagine it'd get a hair sketchy over 70mph in an e30 but nothing I'd really worry about. The e36m rack I have feels great, it really loads up about 25-30 degrees off center, so its kind of dead in the middle but when I'm driving fast I dont notice it too much. I do need new tie rods though, so that's probably contributing to the loose feeling. I'd say, unless you're trying to make a canyon ripper (which I kind of want this car to turn into) the e36 rack is great. I'll probably still swap for a z3 rack eventually though

Cool, I have all new tie-rods and ends to go with the rack and it will stay powered too. Mines a daily, so not looking for the super quick reactions of the Z3. Ive driven an E30 with one and it definitely didnt feel as bad as many make it out to be, but I also didnt do any canyons or anything crazy like that with it

Yeah, I don't think I'll be messing with anything performance-wise until the new engine is in and sorted.

My rear euro bumper mounts are out for delivery right now though so those might be going on this weekend

went down to work on the donor car today as the plan is to get it running enough to drive it up to the garage where I'll be doing the swap. From what I know, it needs a radiator and a battery, the seller included a brand new oem radiator that I think I'll be able to use for the swap, so thats great too. All I did was put oil in the cylinders and then helped my friend out with his e36 m3.
Hes putting an s54 oil pan and pump in as well as rebuilding the entire suspension and hard mounting the drivetrain. Should be very rigid. Its a pretty sweet track/canyon car with a buncha lightweight mods. I'll post more pics of it soon for sure.

Dude, nice pick on the donor car! I had a 328 donor car but it had a grinding ZF so I sold it. Had I kept it, I probably would've followed through with my 24v swap.

I have new UUC underdrive pullies for your M52, e39 fuel rail (integrated FPR), new stage 1 dr vanos rebuild, Febi guides and tensioner set, and an achilles oil pan baffle, all of which you could probably use....

If you want to work something out, hit me up.

I look at that for sale thread quite often. I'll probably be cracking into the engine at some point this weekend so I maaaaayyyy be hitting you up for that vanos kit and possible chain tensioners/guides. But I wouldn't hold my breath as this is in pretty solid condition

                  Daily'ed Sedan build: 1986 325

Went to work on the donor car today to try and get it running and driven up to where I will be doing the swap. Threw the new radiator in (old one had a leak) and used my e30 battery to try and start it up. Installed some new spark plugs for good measure and wasnt getting anything to fire. Pretty sure its a fueling issue, and pretty sure its gummed up injectors, but concerned because wouldnt it fire at last a few sparse times?

The car has sat for 6 months and not moved at all. I could hear the fuel pump making sounds and I double checked and was getting 11 volts at the connector. My fear is that there are some wires chewed up somewhere. I've found a few acorn storages and my coolant level wire is chewed into three pieces. Damn squirrels. Anyone have any other suggestions as to why the car wont fire? It recently got a new crank pos, sensor as well.

Looking for single mass flywheel options, does anyone have any recommendations on steel single mass flywheels for an m52 with zf320? Dont want something as chattery and light as aluminum, but would prefer to not have a dual mass self adjusting clutch

also taking any and all recommendations for "while you're in there" items to replace or refresh since the engine will be out and on a stand for a bit before going into the e30

Im not 100% sure, but I believe that the M20 single mass is usable. Might need to change to a different TOB. I got mine lightened and balanced. Went from ~19# to ~12#. I had the same setup on my aluM52 car with the G260 and a sachs clutch. Felt awesome, OEM comfort

And rebuild your vanos while it's out, along with chain guides. Grab S52 cams too.

Woo! Thanks dudes! I think I'm gonna hold off on s52 cams as it pushes my budget a bit, but am considering finding an m54b30 intake cam to trim and install, if I want to get into the head at all. I'll pull the valve cover and take a peak and if things look less than ideal I'll dive in. I'd love to be able to build this motor a bit more with s52 cams and vanos rebuild etc etc (maybe even stroking it to a 3.0l) but I'm pressed for time a bit.

The goal right now is to get the swap underway as quickly as possible (without avoiding obvious necessities) because I'll be taking classes that run from 10-2pm on saturdays while also working a full time job during the week. Busy busy!
