if there isn't an originality concern, its just so much easier (and probably) cheaper to swap in a bigger engine.

The metric mechanic tool finally showed up, they just forgot to ship it for like a week… very sweet girl in the office got it shipped out right away after I called to check on it.

The tool worked very well and made assembling the valvetrain cake.

              Assembled valve train

Lightweight VW lifters in cam trays, Now just add cams and caps.

They have it for sale on the website and in their ebay store. Yes its slick, and cheap too $50 is very fair for the time saving ease of use. Works on M42 and all M/S5x family engines.

Alright well not exactly how I had planned on spending my Saturday but it is what it is. Sometimes you just have to take matters into your own hands and do shit yourself.

As previously mentioned the new core support was welded on in the incorrect location, set back on the passenger side about 3/8" Lucky I caught this before it went any further and put a work stop out until it could be corrected. The metal guy tried to break the welds and move it but really just butchered the core support in the process.

I new one was ordered and I decided to remove the old one and weld on the new one myself.

Core support removed, weldment areas ground down and weld through primer sprayed to cover all places the original ecoat was compromised.

I've never attempted to plug weld sheet metal before, but looking at the metal guys welds it doesn't look like he had either ha ha ha... not really funny...

Watched a few youtube videos on the subject online and carefully setup the MIG. I setup 8-10 plug welds on the core support that was removed so I could get a feel for it.

Pretty god damn nice for my first hand at it if I do say so myself.

and the backs, showing nice penetration without blow through

New core support welded in place and black etching primer sprayed over all welded areas.

Put up for the evening, 8 hours it took to R&R this thing properly, and my ass is beat.

Higher paying production work just took priority, which I 100% get, but not for months on end with no appreciable progress.

Today I went into the shop to dress the welded areas with brush on seam sealer and touch up spots on the undercarriage and inner body tub.

When the undercarriage is sprayed with fresh undercoat schutz these areas will get a little blow in as well before paint makes them disappear.

Have you ever disassembled the hood hinge for paint?
I can't seem to find any guide on how to do so, all manuals list it as a single assembly.
                                I do things.
