You guys really hate Reddit around here.

I remember chatting with people halfway across the country on our Minitel, and keeping up with my Starsiege pals on BBS and my Warcraft friends on mIRC. I alpha tested RogerWilco, and felt up Mallory Crunig in my Mercury Cougar before seeing The Faculty in theaters.

At any rate, I haven't been here long, but I don't think that matters too much. I've restored a 91 318i over the last few years, and lurked here the entire time. I've also read this whole thread, and there's talk of growing the userbase, so that this doesn't become another forum gone. Beyond any doubt, that's going to require the guy who runs the joint to do some things that are going to hurt your butt. Doesn't have to be Reddit (which you guys have fixated on but that I mentioned once, however many pages ago) but, at the very least, it will require something modern, maybe even something from this decade. So get ready for it, and maybe get on onboard. He'll need all the help he can get, and being hostile to people from social media sites is the wrong kind of help. It's literally being hostile to 100% of potential new members. They're not going to come from anywhere else.

Also, if you think Reddit is bad, then holy shit! Wait until you see the rest! And why can't I quote Star Wars? It's the best.

dude, we don't want that. that's what people are telling you; this is a library that you're going to have to learn how to use.

if you can't get onboard with that, then:

Maybe we should pioneer the way for other forums, by entirely deleting sub-forums, creating one page which you can infinitely scroll down and find people asking what kind of oil they should use in their M20 mixed in with people looking for MegaSquirt base maps for their high displacement ITB build and cats in the form of 10 second short videos?
*Triggered* Then people can tag stuff and other people can guess what tag they might have used in order to search in a clump of posts. Then to know your post is special and to validate your own existence people can like your post, unless not enough people like your post, in which case it gets buried, forever lost to time.

I bought my first PC when you were 6.

varg lol. I knew kinda your age, and looked at both. I thought you were closer to my oldest, but you're dead in the middle of her and I.

That's a broad statement. The internet is quite vast.

My name isn't ForcedFirebird, also have nothing to hide, pretty sure you can click links in my signature and find me.

Wouldn't it just be easier to not display an age, or maybe make it ridiculous, like max old man status?

                  You remind me of Blip.

This has gone off the rails, and I do agree that the vitriol is kind of proving AlexJ's point (and I think he has some valid ones).

isn't reddit pretty much done by now ? i thought most were migrating to something with even less attention span.

I mean... the format is not the problem here. Reddit's format does not work well for this type of discussion board/archive IMO, so why do we have to entertain the idea of making r3v like reddit?

AlexJ got sour when people shut that idea down.

Telling us to "get with the times or die."

The fact they people come here from reddit to find info and ultimately sign up says it all. Sure the UI is funky and the site is slow, but at the end of the day this dated shithole is still the best despite the fact that other "modern" alternatives are out there.

Reddit is hardly a step above FB.

The format of organization does not need to change, but rather the UI and speed issues. If reddit were the answer, we'd be better off letting this place burn and go there.

If this site were fast and it were easier to host/post media, that would be a huge help IMO. These newer kids are too lazy to figure vBulletin. It's not that complicated, but when you come here from FB or reddit where everything is over simplified and have to wait 10-15 seconds for a page to load, they get turned off.

You say, "get with the times or die."

and I say, "get off my lawn."

                                Sour? Moi?

Use imagination. Imaginify up some ideas. There are ways to use these sites to drive traffic here w/o becoming those sites, which is the point I've been making throughout. That said, this forum will definitely need some simplification, but you're going to need some perspective first. Case in point: the forum index is poorly organized, from a new user perspective, and is as long and boring as a Dan Brown novel. Also, we know that, as a general rule, all potential members will have shit attention spans. Good luck with that.

There are plenty of ways to modernize the site, while making it easier to use, all without sacrificing any existing functionally.

Also, I'm not just being an asshole here. It really is get with the times or die. You're just going to keep getting older, along with anyone else who uses forums like this, and when you go, so will they. This is a fact of life. Lots of great shit, often the really good shit, is lost to time everyday, leaving behind a bunch of goobers, shaking their fists at the youth for letting them down. Why oh why can't they just see how great your way is? Meanwhile, they can't figure out why a bunch of middle aged men and geezers treat them like shit, lack all patience for the fact that they're just kids who could benefit from some guidance, and we all suffer because there are no men left who understand they have an obligation to bring up the next generation, only men who claim to have learned everything, and all of it the hard way, but get down on kids for not knowing it all before they've felt their first tit. Only jackasses look at the youth with scorn.

Bimmers are badass. Everyone loves them. No good reason this place shouldn't be crawling with newcomers and enthusiasts alike, and the bad ones can be easily remedied.
