does this picture disturb you? i posted this picture of me with a pigs head up on facebook, and it sparked some very interesting conversation. i wanted to see what conversation i could spark here. i think it is interesting to hear peoples reactions to this picture. i do not think that many of us realize where our meat comes from. sure we know what animals it comes from but do you really stop and think about the fact that the stake at safe way you are about to buy was walking around a few weeks ago? i think the fact that all out meat comes butchered and prepackaged for us today separates us and desensitizes us from the fact that our pork chop was once a happy pig with the inteligance of a 3 year old. this said im not going to stop eating meat cus i love it, but i think people should respect the animals they eat. they did die to feed you and they do taist good!;)

In retrospect after reading the rest of the responses, I'm going to guess spelling isn't high on the list of requirements for any chef. There's no way it can be with two of you going to school for it and spelling as poorly as you do. I literally laughed out loud at the "have you cooked with hair" exchange.

Its a dead pig.... Its what we eat. I dont really eat pork, because I own a pot belly pig, and hes a stud. I do enjoy the ocassional carnitas burrito here and there, so whatever. I am not offended, but Id be a little offended if that was brought to my dinner table. I dont want to see the dead animal, I just want to eat it.

The picture Maluco posted is a bunch of sick individuals. A guy at work hunts pigs, and he always brings pictures of these dead animals. I WAS offended when he showed a picture of a gutted pregnant pig, and hes acting like hes eating these dead baby pigs, or he was humping the dead pig.

A little respect should be shown, they did die to be delicious. Nothing wrong with the pic, though.

I just read the debate on eating meat and not.

We're not SUPPOSED to eat meat. Thats why we have flat teeth, and longer intestinal tracts. Its a fact, so what? Cows also take tons of resources, besides water, to produce, including feed and land.

Lets make it clear, that eating meat is NOT what is making America fat. America is full of fat, lazy, slobs, who just dont really care about their appearance or health. I eat a lot of meat (Currently no carbs, so all I really eat is in fact meat), and Im sure Im healthier than a lot of the hippies veggie losers. Meat is healthier than processed sugars like white bread, white rice, and white pasta.

Im not saying its right or wrong to eat meat or be a veggie, but take your preaching bullshit elsewhere.

but you could still tell what i was trying to say right? what does it matter if i did not spell steak right? i spell words the way they sound, and for me it sounds like steak should be spelled stake. big wup! why be such a spelling nazi? does it make you feel special, like you know something? you can spell in english! good for you! so can most of the rest of america. do you know how to braze a pork shoulder to perfection? i don't think so. im not going to get down on you for that.

Soybean boom spells bad news for climate

CHOPPING down the Amazon rainforest to plant soybean crops is more detrimental to the climate than clearing space to graze cows. Fields of soybean reduce rainfall dramatically, over four times as much as pastureland.

Around 13 per cent of the original Brazilian rainforest has been cleared so far, with 85 per cent turned into pasture and 15 per cent into soybean fields. However, these plantations are rapidly expanding thanks to soya's popularity as a food and suitability as a biofuel.

To measure how different land use affects climate, Marcos Costa from the Federal University of Viçosa in Brazil, and colleagues, measured changes in albedo or reflectivity over experimental plots of soybean and pastureland. They then plugged the data into a climate model to investigate the effect of the change in land use.

Clearance of any kind caused a decline in rainfall but soybean dried up the skies much more than pastureland (Geophysical Research Letters, DOI: 10.1029/2007GL029271). When three-quarters of the forest plots were cleared for soybean, there was a 15.7 per cent decrease in precipitation, while the same clearance for pasture produced a 3.9 per cent decrease.

The stronger reflectivity of soybean fields was to blame. "With a higher albedo than pasture - and forest - the soybean crop absorbs less solar radiation, heating the surface less, decreasing convection and cloudiness and, in the end, causing less precipitation," explains Costa.

Carefully planned farming might help to reduce the damage. "Inter-cropping or designing a better spatial arrangement of forest and cropland could produce a better result," says Jon Lovett, an environmental scientist at the University of York, UK.

Soybean may eventually lose some of its popularity. "It could well be that biofuel production from other sources will be cheaper than high-protein soybeans," says Lovett.

Nonetheless, the soybean boom shows no sign of abating for the moment, with the construction of the 1144-kilometre trans-oceanic highway connecting Brazil's Atlantic ports to Peru's Pacific ports, and the paving of the BR-163 highway, making export of agricultural products to international markets much easier.

while i know that grassing cows and other live stock is bad for the world so are a lot of crops. the fact of the matter is is that there are way to many people on this earth and that growing food for them all is unsustainable no matter what.
