    Ted Kennedy died.

    http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/08/...t.ted.kennedy/

His brain cancer got to him. Not a fan at all of his liberal policies and his fight for healthcare reforms, but he still put in his years representing the beliefs of some Americans. RIP.

not much of a fan of his policies, but i respect and salute anyone willing to put that much effort and time into trying to better his country. If we only had one party we would be communists. RIP

It's Chappaquiddick Island. If you're going to malign the man, at least get the bigger details right.

The incident happened a year before I was born in what was likely just as salacious and scummy as has been imagined. Sadly, it has become a colloquialism for covering up the truth of the matter. A girl died in very suspicious circumstances and a wealthy playboy never served jail time even for the least charge he openly pleaded guilty to.

He was 37, a year younger than I am today. She was about to turn 29.

Perhaps now Mary Jo Kopechne can rest in peace?

That's not really what happened (but no one alive knows all of the details). Forty years ago, Ted Kennedy attended a party where he and buddies could nail secretaries on the Island of Chappaquiddick while their wives and kids stayed at home. He took one of the office workers to the other side of the island to fuck her and drove off of crappy bridge because he was going too fast (and was probably drunk).

He got out of the car, but dove back in seven or eight times to try to get her out. The current was too strong. He walked back to the party cottage, but passed about four cottages on the way where he could have summoned help more quickly. When he got to the cottage, he told his friends and they went back to try to rescue her. The current was too strong and despite repeated attempts, they could not get her out. This was on a tiny island back in the sixties and so it wasn't like this happened in an urban area. It's debatable, but t is my understanding that it was unlikely that Mary Jo Kopechne could have been saved after he drove into the water. No one knows for sure how long she survived in the car. IMO, he had been drinking most of the night and this happened just before 1 am. He obviously made a ton of bad decisions.

In the middle of the night, Ted swam back to the mainland and tried to make it look like he had been on the mainland all night (hoping he could find someone else to take the blame). In the morning, after the getting advice from his family, he gave a statement to the police (but did not give the details). He denied being drunk and trying to nail the secretary.

I'll say that it's a pretty fucked up thing to have done. I don't think that "Chappaquiddick" makes Ted Kennedy a good person, but the way right wingers cling to this story you would think that he burned babies for profit. Feel free to argue about the details, I'm just saying that mrsleeve's account is not accurate.
