Politics aside (just this once!), I cannot see how anyone can defend this decision. From Encarta:

"Nominations of candidates are due on February 1 of the award year. Then, Nobel committee members and consultants meet several times to evaluate the qualifications of the nominees. The various committees cast their final votes in October and immediately notify the laureates that they have won."

That means that Obama would have been nominated on his work within the first 1-1/2 weeks in office. I don't care what party you align yourself with--that is absolutely irresponsible on the part of the Nobel-voters.

I was going to state this as well. All he did at this point is make campain promises and throw 2 inaugural balls. He did say he was going to close down Guantanamo and end the war in Iraq, it never happened but they may have nominated him based on the notion. Someone at work brought up a pretty good point that the socialist sweed's thought he had good campaign promises, so they nominated him hoping he'd follow through.

First of all, the Nobel committee is Norwegian not Swedish. As for the deadline, we don't know what process they worked through in this case for at least 50 years. What are you talking about? Have you been following the situation in Iran? Obama has spoken out very harshly against Iran and has called for more sanctions. He has also scrapped the ICBM missile shield in Eastern Europe in favor of smaller, shorter ranged missiles pointed directly at Iran. This has in turn caused the Russians to support us in actions against Iran. Russia supported Iran before and now thanks to Obama's diplomatic actions they are now a key ally against Iran's proliferation of nukes.

What needs to happen now is more and more economic sanctions until they come begging. This is EXACTLY what is happening in North Korea right now. We ratcheted up the sanctions and now they are the ones begging for direct talks. They are bleeding and we didn't even have to fire a single shot.

What is Obama supposed to do? Would you rather him mobilize millions of troops and military equipment and invade Iran and North Korea? :loco:
