I know not everyone likes them, and I find a skinny-wheeled stock one a little dorky, but from a design standpoint, there's more to them than you might realize.
The 911 is a different animal. It comes as an evolution of the great 356 shape, so it comes out of the tradition of the 50s and early 60s. The 914 was VW & Porsche's deliberate effort to design a modernist, 70s, minimal, mid-engine sports car for the masses. Clean straight lines.
But in person, they're way curvier than your first impression from a distance. They have hips, flares, interesting shapes that flow together.
The top of the windshield is tall, and the highest point of the car. It has quite a slope. Compare to the proportions of a 908 or 917.
The body is wider/taller at the front wheels and tapers to the back.
The front fenders are a nod to the then current 908 with the light bubbles on the front slope - 914 has long turn signal lenses. The hood sits between them like the race car noses and the 911 - family traits. But still has a functional trunk.
It's low. It's wide for a tiny car. You sit right on the floor between the structural rails. Center of gravity is very low. You sit with your butt against the cooling intake fan of a flat 6. There's a bulge between the seat backs to give it more air flow. As compact in packaging as the current mid-engine race cars were.
The sloping, chopped roof and back are all Kamm design and the latest aero ideas. A lot of pure function as well - another Porsche trait. Flat rear deck over the engine. Windshield forward / long rear deck mid-engine design.
Then check out the detailing on the short roof and buttresses - you see that it has the curve of the 908 buttress, and later the 917 - which were for aero - not so much on the 914 I don't think, but it's there. There's a bit of open 908 and Targa in the roof.
So, not trying to sell anyone on them - I've just noticed a lot of design lineage in all their cars, even if subtle. Good design is solving problems on a strict budget.

LEGOS!
Not just hard parkers... track action
I will end with what I hope my own 911 will look like. Classic 911, Ruf bits and a 3.2
Like I said, I have more and still am working on getting them all. My Father told me he burned the pics on a disc and then deleted them, but neither myself nor my brother had this disc. Luckily I found the pics on his laptop. They wouldve been gone forever and I wouldve been sad. I got engaged on this day and theres also a few pics of that so my fiance would be sad too :rofl:Simon
