That has been changing. Turks object to the word "genocide" with its modern implications. Modern Turks do, of course, admit that the Ottomans killed huge numbers of Armenian subjects. The question is whether the modern concept of genocide is the most appropriate way to describe it.

If you read Middle Eastern history, you would see that there is a lively debate on the subject and there are good arguments to be made in either case.

I don't recall saying it was or wasn't a genocide. In fact, I'm one of the Turks that feels it was...so you're barking up the wrong tree, Lee.

Clearly, huge numbers of people were killed (whether you call it genoicde or not). The only point I'm making is that religion wasn't a significant issue. Again, virtually all historians agree on this point.

The primary issue was nationalism, and there were other economic and political reasons behind what happened. But to suggest that the Armenians were killed simply because they were Christian is pretty silly and reflects a lacks of understanding about what was going on in the region at the time.

The important thing is that people were killed. Calling it a genocide doesn't change that fact. Pretending that these people were killed for their religious beliefs is simply wrong.

Besides, you seem to be forgetting (or perhaps you never knew?) that Muslims were in the minority during Ottoman times. The great majority of Ottoman subjects were non-Muslim, and almost of all the non-Muslims were Christian. Don't forget, the Balkans and the Eastern Mediterranean were considered the heart of the Ottoman Empire.
