Just watched the first two episodes of season 1, and the walkers were way more capable. They were using rocks as tools to smash windows, opening doors using the knobs, and climbing over fences.
What happened?
Also, as far as the gub'nr thinking that the walkers may have residual memories of their past life, in the very first episode opening scene Rick sees a little girl walker bend over and pick up her stuffed animal.
