BUT when you are using HDR to combine 3 identical images with the difference between them being shutter time you are getting a more true to life image to what your eye sees. Your eye can process about 10 stops of light between Highlight and shadow, a photograph digital or other wise can only capture 3-4 stops of light with a proper exposure. This is why you end up with highlights being blow out all to hell, and shadow areas underexposed to look just black. When you take 3 shots one each for the highlight middle and shadow, and combine them you get an image that is much closer to what the eye can see at an given time. No matter how "good" you are you could never have captured an image like this with a single image, the clear sky in the upper left would be a white blob, the hillside behind the barns would be a black spot, and everything in the shadows would indecipherable
I dont use Photoshop by the way and this shot was not processed through PS either. That shot is about as true to life as it can get, it looks like you are standing right there, thats how it looked to the eye at the time when the photo was taken.Last edited by mrsleeve; 02-26-2012, 07:54 AM.Originally posted by FusionIf a car is the epitome of freedom, than an electric car is house arrest with your wife titty fucking your next door neighbor.

If you don't ever intend to have a client and make money then throw that out the window and shoot however makes you happy. For me, processing is fun, and allows me to try at executing a vision I have in my mind when I take the shot.
By the way, I'm not saying the above HDR is a particularly good example of this.Originally posted by z31maniacI just hate everyone.

*not my shot there
I had a cheapy kodak camera and was using photomatrix with a +1 -1 and 0 exposure.... I dont really know anything about hdr except that if you get too excited with it all the colors start to look somewhere between 'too real' or 'like your on mushrooms' kind of thing. It was amazing to me how a decent camera plus a little bit of digital 'help' could make almost anything look freaking amazing.

In this day and age processing is as valuable, if not more valuable, than taking a good picture in the camera. To be a successful photographer today you need to take great pictures and be able to process them.

I have an 18-135 on my 60D right now, looking to upgrade to the 17-40L. It fits my needs as far as focal length and price are concerned. The 24-70 F2.8 is nearly twice the price, can't afford that one. Another added bonus is it will be compatible when I eventually upgrade to the 5dII.
Can you post some shots or links to video of the 17-40?
