^ a 2 second drop thanks to photoshop...

It looks even more wonky 4x4 status. It also looks wonky for other reasons I am now noticing but haven't fixed.

There are a lot of more "traditional" uses for photos that don't really want the processed look - I'll still argue that some processing can always be beneficial if done right.

      <rant> I hate HDR ahh </rant>
I agree, some processing is useful. To be honest, I really suck at it. That's why I try to get it right on the camera as best I can. I use filters, ect. HDR pics can look really cool, but in order to achieve the end product, you have to manipulate multiple images. That said, I wonder what would happen if you shot the pic on a tripod, and varied the exposure up and down by shooting the same pic at different settings, but not advancing the frame so to say. (You can do this with some film cameras, not sure if my D7000 will do it however.) It would be tough to keep the camera at exactly the same spot, but if mounted on a very solid tripod, it might work. Hmmm, I might have to try this.

I used 4 images to build the ones up above of the van. Not saying they are a perfect example, but I am working on blending exposures. I see lots of things I can improve, but I'm happy with the direction my editing skills are going. I'm sure in a couple days I'll be depressed with them all over again...

notbland.com will do that to you.

Some of my old HDR experiments.
I like how it highlights things you wouldn't otherwise notice.

I think you get odd ghosting stuff that way- I think the people that do the light painting use something like this?

For the hdr I just have a setting on the camera that takes a +1, 0, and -1 exposure in a 3 shot burst. Gotta use a tripod to keep the images mostly lined up but the software actually helps align them for you. Its really just put it on the setting, shoot a pic, load the 3 images into the software..... then play around with the blending and levels of each to make it look crazy.

1 sec I will see if I can find one.

I think hdr falls in nearly the same category as the whole instagram or hipsterfying filters lots of folks are using these days.... can turn a photograph into a more artsy fartsy type of thing and I agree that it does make it loose the 'photograph' quality when you do it. Click's example of the cabin there is pretty spot on with what amazing things the post processing hdr can do.... and kind of closer to what your eyes actually see.... but when you go overboard with the post-processing you lose that photograph quality. Makes me want to get better camera soon. And buy the stupid program so I don't have watermarks.

when it comes to HDR, I try not to go too over board with it. I like it to a point but I still see it as tool, no more no less

I think this was a 7 min exposure with nothing but moonlight. I admit, I did adjust it a little bit with lightroom, but not a whole lot.
