oh i know, i have been doing metal fab/welding/restoration/bodywork for 17+ years.

just curious, is there a problem with changing the heat treat by heavy DAing on the early hand hammered german stuff like on the old ferrari's and you need to re anneal it?

it sounds like you were fair on what you were paying him, but from a stand point of someone who has been doing it for a while, that is not much money if you are living on your own. if he showed no promise or interest in moving up, it is a moot point though.

i have also seen a lot of helper bitches really mess things up and had to go back and fix them.

Most of it was annealed once and from what I've experienced, it just turns into a brittle mess if you try it again. Especially true on the brittish cars as they are made mostly of 1100, not 3003 or 3034 like we have available today.

Do people just not understand how hard it can be to write the Gcode and finalize it properly with peak efficiency?! If you don't make 15 an hour doing any kind of CAD/CAM, Especially any Mastercam and Solidworks/Autodesk/CATIA work, I'd be questioning things. That's a fairly limited niche market really.

Usually people are put out with CAD under their belt, with no CAM experience. When I worked at my last job, the guy they hired (Over me, when I was already there), Had no idea WTF G-code was, and I ended up doing his fucking job, then they fired me. Then they couldn't figure out how to work the CNC machine and called me to come in and show them for no pay. Then they went bankrupt.... (I'm not on a high horse, firing me wasn't even remotely close to the nail in the coffin, purely coincidental)

I got paid $10 an hour to do much more labor intensive work, and do 2 other guys work. It sucked, but it was a job.

To live in a place not in the ghetto, you need to make $20/hr to live in South Boston and thats without a car loan or bills outside rent and food. I can't fathom making $15/hr.

So glad people don't like the flyover states.

$15 an hour is more than enough to survive for a 22 year old single dude in the PNW. Especially with being able to work as many hours as he wants. definitely not the sharpest tool in the shed.

I'm continually amazed, in this economy, when young people can't even be satisfied to have a job that pays at least double the minimum wage..

Shit, I'm getting along just fine at $11.50 an hour slinging parts at an indy shop.

Def a lesson to me to go to school. My habits (see sig) are getting very, very expensive.

I hired him at $15 an hour and was going to bump him to $20. I provided all the tools and bought lunch on Fridays. A paid trip to Pebble Beach or the RR national meet is included. Looking around this morning, I seem to be missing quite a few things, mostly hand tools. It's just part of doing business I suppose.

                      This Exactly!

At 22 years old and not having any skill he should be happy for the chance someone is giving him. In an economy where so many are out of work and are having to take lesser paying jobs just to have one, he's not very bright..

My son is almost 16 and is having a hard time finding work because the jobs he would usually apply for at that age are filled by people that are in their 20's - 40's who lost their jobs and had to do anything to survive.

I started in the machining trade at 18. I didnt make much more than minimum wage. I busted my butt and took the pay I could get because I was being trained as I worked. You get what you earn. I now make the best wage wherever I go and even in the down turn I switched jobs with a raise, more vacation, and other benefits. Its all what you make of it. It seems today more than ever people want everything for nothing.

If you don't have a skill, why on earth should you expect to make more than minimum wage. $15/h full time in your early 20's is a decent wage but if you are unskilled, that is a fantastic wage. People make me sick.

Christ when I was a shop boy (heavy construction shops), 12 was about tops and I was doing anything and everything. From prep and paint equipment, referb and fixing shit that needed to go back out in the spring, building random shit, parts organization, cutting the grass, power washing the equipment, painting the buildings blahhh blahhh general bitch work. But it was better than working at a restaurant, or big box store for 6.50 an hour. Well till I was 18 anyway, then I was still in the shop in the winter time doing all that kinda shit but at my normal Field work scale.

Yea my first real job after my mcd's job was a mig welder at 16 years old. 10.00 an hour. I thought it was pretty good for 16. And I was the lead welder because I was the only welder haha. Then I went and worked for my dad's company as a service tech for 11.75 eventually ending at 14.00/hr at 20 years old (prob worth about $16/$17 tho.) So 15/hr is about right for a skilled early twenties with no experience.

Now Im 25 with no college degree, but 8 years exp in the field service industry and 4 of that in automation and motion control. Im around 75k a year. Im tapped out for pay rate at my age. I'd have to work a lot more o/t or go back for my degree.

I get $10.50/hr, up from $9.50 after my first year. It doesn't pay enough, but I enjoy what I do, and it keeps a roof over my head. It's all about appreciating what you have, I guess.
