That's what I would probably buy...

Or if I was feeling particularly baller

Buy EVGA Z170 Stinger 111-SS-E172-KR LGA 1151 Intel Z170 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Mini ITX Intel Motherboard with fast shipping and top-rated customer service. Once you know, you Newegg!

Opinions on 970 SLI vs single 980? I have a 970 already but I could sell it off and go towards a 980 or just buy a second 970 and SLI

SLI only works in a few games, still not worth it IMO.

If you plan on only playing games with decent support for it then go for it, otherwise you will have an extra 970 doing nothing for a lot of games.

Yeah, if you're looking at a 980, wait for the Pascal and the 1080 to come out. Should be pretty soon.

Skip the 980, not very good value for dollar.
And skip SLI, getting less and less supported.

If you want better, go straight to 980ti. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200. The Russian mail order bride is okay though.
If you can't wait until the upcoming cards, that is. The 970 is still a great card at this point.

I can attest to the 970. I just picked the MSI Gaming 970 for $330, minus $20 mail in rebate AND The Division. This card is awesome. The biggest advantage is it is quiet as hell until you game. Great for a dual purpose/office setup. The temps are nice and low even under load.

Not sure if ive posted a pic on here since my rebuild or not.. So here's a couple.

                      Some specs:

                      ASRock Z77 Extreme4 LGA 1155
                      Intel i5-3570K @3.4GHz
                      Gigabyte Windforce GTX 970
                      8GB (4x2) DDR3 Ballistix Sport Memory
                      Patriot Blast 240GB SSD
                      Hitachi 750GB 7200RPM HDD
                      Corsair CX750 750watt power supply

                      Peripherals:
                      Corsair K70 RGB MX Browns
                      Logitech G502 Spectrum mouse
2 Dell 22in 1680x1050 monitors (just some i had laying around the house)
                      Astro A50 wireless headset

Next upgrades are going to be 1080p monitors and new speakers.

I thought about 4K, but its not worth it to me, plus i dont like huge monitors.

970 for 1080 performace is great, but as other stated, wait till the new cards come out. As the 1080/1070 will be pretty cheap compared to the 980/970, I bet good deals are to be seen to get rid of stock or even used.

                        Comment

GTX 1080 is going to be $599-699 at launch. 1070 is gonna be $379-449 at launch.

So far the performance sounds really good. Stock clock speed for the 1080 is 1607MHz boost is 1733MHz. However it was noted at the live event that one of the demo cards was running an overclock of 2100+MHz at 67 C. Nvidia claims it wasn't a cherry picked card and that is maintained their reference (or founder's edition) cooler design. If that's true... this generation of cards is going to be nutty.

EVGA Boards, good hardware, poor UEFI/BIOS. Go with Gigabyte or Asus.

I plan on running 1080p forever so the GTX970 I picked up is going to last a long time.
