Honestly I built it just to have a place to sit and listen to Hotline Bling on repeat.
Id wait till this fall before I made any choices though, Im on the fence about a new PC build too (even though I really dont need one) but I want to see what AMD Zen has to offer.
Opinions on 970 SLI vs single 980? I have a 970 already but I could sell it off and go towards a 980 or just buy a second 970 and SLI

Skip the 980, not very good value for dollar.
And skip SLI, getting less and less supported.
If you want better, go straight to 980ti. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200. The Russian mail order bride is okay though.
If you can't wait until the upcoming cards, that is. The 970 is still a great card at this point.

I can attest to the 970. I just picked the MSI Gaming 970 for $330, minus $20 mail in rebate AND The Division. This card is awesome. The biggest advantage is it is quiet as hell until you game. Great for a dual purpose/office setup. The temps are nice and low even under load.
970 for 1080 performace is great, but as other stated, wait till the new cards come out. As the 1080/1070 will be pretty cheap compared to the 980/970, I bet good deals are to be seen to get rid of stock or even used.
GTX 1080 is going to be $599-699 at launch. 1070 is gonna be $379-449 at launch.
So far the performance sounds really good. Stock clock speed for the 1080 is 1607MHz boost is 1733MHz. However it was noted at the live event that one of the demo cards was running an overclock of 2100+MHz at 67 C. Nvidia claims it wasn't a cherry picked card and that is maintained their reference (or founder's edition) cooler design. If that's true... this generation of cards is going to be nutty.
