I used to lift, then I started surfing. Yes, I'm using surfing as an excuse.

So for today (legs), this is what I started with (weights include bar). Each block was a superset.

    Squats - 5 sets/12 reps @ 145 lbs
    Leg press - 5 sets/12 reps @ 180 lbs

    Stiff leg deadlift - 5 sets/12 reps @ 180 lbs
    Hamstring curl - 5 sets/12 reps @ 50 lbs (each side)

Dumbell lunges - 5 sets/12 reps @ 35 lbs (each side, 35 lb dumbell in each hand)
    Standing calf raises - 5 sets/12 reps @ 180 lbs

personally me before I started weight lifting and every time I come begin my season again (I only lift seriously for 4 - 5 months of the year) I always take a week to do BW exercises to build up some base level strength... pushups.. situps.. pullups...bw squats ..

then I move on to the weight... stick to a 5x5 relatively light.. then a week or two later I transition to 5/3/1 (not including warmup sets).. then I move to a sort of BBB routine.. start with 5/3/1 and then 3 sets 5 reps of 5+ added to my 5 rep max from the 5/3/1 scheme...

but I am at that point where I can go into a gym even after not lifting for 6 months and still squat and bench my BW and DL twice my BW.

I also mainly do compounds though.. rarely ever do isolations.. maybe just 1-3 sets after a heavy compound day.

    you should add weights.
go to body building.com and find a plan there are tons of them.
just starting I would do 4 days a week.
    Arm day (bi, tri, forearm)
    Chest back shoulder day
    Leg & abs day

just do 2 exercises for each muscle starting out.

Do you even touch your chest?
I always say "if you don't touch, that shit don't count."

Start with cardio. Rowing is ideal, running is good.

Bench press is good to get testosterone pumping - get your body used to being pushed before stepping it up.

Well, I'm starting in the gym, I have no expectations or goals of size, weight, BF%, or anything like that. I just want to not wake up 40 and unable to get rid of what I got, so I started now. I got a membership to Anytime Fitness and I'm kinda wandering around wondering what I am supposed/should do.

Right now I'm at 6'9" 278.4 lbs., and I'm down from a career high of 363 lbs. due to becoming stagnant after a two year wrist/arm injury that left me sedentary. I've dropped to where I am now by diet change without much of any physical activity.

Any suggestions of a startup plan/routine to get moving forward?

(Pretend I'm fairly stupid and explain why I should do what is suggested.)

I'm at the gym right now to do exactly this. Not gonna lie it was kind of embarrassing but you can't just fucking quit.
