I would so join a union so I can drink and smoke on the job and never get fired for it. Just kidding.

I am a union member and we can get fired from a job, at least in the shipping industry. Granted it would take a lot to get fired (for the day; paid time worked or banned from working at that place for x amount of time) but drugs and alcohol are a big no-no if you get caught or get into an accident. For instance, a union member killing someone while under the influence (with drug test evidence). The Union cannot save him from that. If nothing has happened the member will be sent to rehab a few times before they get deregistered. Some, not all, union members feel they can do whatever they want with little repercussion. They hide behind it instead of standing up for it.

I wasn't saying they aren't legally able to. The UAW has a horrible record of keeping on those that would have been fired in a millisecond on a normal job.
            They are unable to.

Because they know it's nearly impossible to get fired and they know they wouldn't be snitched on by a person using their proper name, they obviously weren't worried about getting in trouble.
The thought of doing something like this while working has never crossed my mind.

So manic because I hold a union book I cant discuss, or have an opinion on other unionized industries, that give all of us a bad name?????

So because the UAW is the poster child for unionism gone ary, and is one of the biggest examples of "too much of a good thing" and a greedy union management, bringing a industry to its knees. Just because I hold a book, I cant objectively understand this, recognize it, and see it for what it is????

You fail to realize not all unions are created equal, and that most of us still work our asses off every day to make living, some times its not as good you seem to think it is. Just because there are some bad apples that happen to hold a book, that dose not mean its representative of all of us. I bet I can find some some video of guys drinking on a break while on the clock that dont hold a book, would that be representative of all of you guys that dont happen to be unionized????

The mind set you liken z31 to is the same many hold against a great many things. It's short sighted and arrogant. I don't like Unions but of late, I've been considering getting into them for the Electrical field as work in smaller businesses is just far too unstable right now. Not that the Union would be better, but the pay would carry me much further than a Private owned business.

You have to see though where Union's can and do hurt Private businesses. I know in WA State, the General Contractor Union's bank roll money from Union Due's, a precentage of profit, ect and when things get slow for everyone, under bid dramatically (~$50,000) just to keep things moving. I don't see this as bad as how the Electrician's Union has pushed legislation in WA State so that if a None-Union shop where to bid on a prevailing wage job, they have to pay ALL of their Electrician's, including Apprentices full Prevailing Wage whereas the Union's pay Apprentices a scaled wage to their years of Experience. For example, prevailing wage is $60+ for a Journeyman Electrician. Unions can scale their apprentice wages as such: 1st year, 25%, 2nd year, 50%, ect. A None Union shop has to pay the full $60+ an hour to their Apprentices despite experience which as I'm sure you can tell, severely hurts their chances to land a prevailing wage job (Government building contracts, ect).

In 2010, more than a dozen Chrysler workers were caught on camera drinking and possibly smoking some sweet, sweet Mary Jane during a lunch break.

Of course it happens everywhere but it's just more salt in the wound because these are Union members. People don't care about random workers having sex, drinking or doing drugs on the job. It happens all the time but let Union members do it and it's on the news and apparently a topic of discussion on automotive forums.
