The interesting point is that nobody was offended from this forum. Each party was simply promoting their point of view. But hey, as long as we skip the "j" word, we are safe ;-)

I am also glad that somebody had enough culture to highlight that December 24th is winter's solstice and used to be a pagan celebration day that the catholic church highjacked and piggybacked its own celebration in order to get acceptance.

Im christian and i recognize how christmas started. I still like to celebrate by bettering my life and helping others. I really loathe how people get so caught up in gifts.

I think its more common knowledge at this point. Just the concept of the birth happening in the dead of winter is, well, a bit much.

Probably my biggest beef with religion in general (having spent 12 years in the church, including bible school) is the idea that they randomly take X as concrete fact and Y as a "story to live your life by" but never really seem to back up the X, ever. Its really what drove a wedge between me and the church. They were nice people, just couldnt handle all the questions from the curious 12 year old (well, that and my mom pulled me from bible school when it turns out they covered for a janitor who molested an 8 year old girl).

I don't think I've ever met an atheist that actually opposed or cared about christmas. Usually it's just the christians blathering on about how their religion is under attack or something.. heh.

I don't think it's just Christians that feel offended. I find it usually atheists like to keep bagging on any kind of organized religion....
