^Unlikley, if someone breaks in when you are home, they mean to do you harm. If they just wanted to steal your stuff they would until the next morning after you've left for work.

Home invasions are incredibly rare.

I was a claim rep at State Farm for 1.5 years on the theft team, housing side. I handled literally HUNDREDS of theft claims as well as the other 6 people on my team (and keep in mind we were only covering OK/KS).

In thousands of burglary claims, exactly ONE was a home invasion.

The homeowner was home, heard the commotion at his front door, took a defensive position and blasted the guy with his shotgun as he came thorugh the door.........nothing stolen...........I just paid him for the clean up to his house and replacing the door.

I gotta say I think you are wrong there. Barking dog is good, because it makes the thief/invader's presence known. But if someone is in the house and you pump that shotgun, all you did was alert the thief to your presence and make him feel his life is threatened. So rather than fleeing so he doesn't get caught he may feel cornered and threatened and things may get much worse

And you showing up with a shotgun is an inferior deterrent because it makes the intruder feel threatened?

That logic makes zero sense, because in the second case, the intruder's presence is obviously already known, a fact that you used as the central argument for your first case. So essentially, your second case only differs from the first in that the intruder feels threatened in addition to being known.

Now I ask you this: how does putting fear into the intruder not assist in deferring said intruder once his presence is known? What about having your life threatened makes you not flee when simply being discovered does?

An alarm is a much better theft deterrent than racking a shotgun. Guns don't work when you're not home.

I'm not discouraging gun use, so I'm not sure what point you are trying to make.

Hands-down an alarm system is a better theft deterrent than racking a shotgun.

Seriously man, you have to look at the most logical response. You said it yourself, the man will feel threatened. Therefore, he will run 99% of the time.

With that logic do you think it's better to hide, unarmed, in a corner and hope that he just takes your stuff and leaves?

Thats not what I'm saying. By all means approach with a gun. I just think announcing to the intruder that you're coming is a bad idea when you have the element of surprise on your side. Homecourt advantage, like you said.

I guess I should have been more clear. See my other post. I just feel alerting the intruder to your presence is a bad idea. I am totally for having a gun to defend yourself in such situations. But as someone said a barking dog is a good deterrent because a thief is less likely to attempt to break into a house if theres a big dog barking at him from the property when he scopes it out.

But I just feel it would be better to not alert him to your presence until its too late for him to do anything and you have an undeniable advantage. Does that make more sense? I'm not 100% sure how to explain it. I just wouldnt announce my presence by cocking my shotgun for him to hear and have time to try and prepare something you know?

And just to be clear, I am 100% for gun rights. I believe people need to be able defend themselves and their family.

Thats why you keep that gun hot with one in the hole so you dont have to make a sound. You rack it in the middle of the night you give up your most precious advantage. SURPRISE!!!!!! You dont want the fuck head that breaks into your home to know that your not only Awake and aware of their presence, but to the fact that you are ARMED and ready, and you have just told him WHERE YOU ARE IN THE HOUSE. You want all that to be a big fucking surprise.

Whats so odd about that configuration for where I live. You know we have shit that can and will eat our horses or dog at night time and there are 2 of us in the room shouldnt we both be armed if need be. Also I am not home much so yeah

Yeah I know you are. Hell even I think most of the people that have been on that show are a bit nuts.
