...They're usually military grade and made to kill (or people like me who just like to shoot bad ass guns at targets), not for recreation like hunting...Apples and oranges my friend...
You're comparing this:

to this

This is what I'm personally packing- a Socom II, a M4 with an Aimpoint red dot, along with a Glock 22, a Glock 19, two Kimbers, and a M1 Garand. But I'm, not a fucking nutcase so why infringe on my rights to own them and have fun?

that video is stupid. as justification for a school dress code it is a fail- that clown couldn't have walked five steps without most of the shit falling out, much less the stiff right leg caused by that 870. he stashed all if it right there in front of that table just before filming.
the tactical advantage of ak-47 over the ruger is magazine capacity and form. a detachable 30 round box allows combatant to carry multiple quick reloads. the ruger holds at most four cartridges in a tube magazine which must be reloaded one at a time.maybe you gun guys can enlighten me about assault weapons vs regular guns
what's so special about using an AK-47 versus say a ruger .44 semi auto? are they that much more lethal?
as semi-autos, the two rifles probably share a very similar rate of fire except for this reloading advantage. we could talk about projectile velocity and terminal ballistics if you want but in the context of a crazy lone wolf attack the performance of the cartridges is similar enough.
you do know however, the joker clown had an ar15, right?

OK as promised.
For starters lets move your comapro to like calibers. While a 44mg in a carbine is great little short range hunting rifle for smallish to mid sized game, its not an apples to apples comparo for your specific question.
For the sake of argument we are not going to use the AK either, as that cartridge does not have that many chambering's in a traditional style rifle.
We will use the .223/5.56 NATO and the .308/7.62x51 NATO while there are some minor differances in the civilian and NATO specs for simplicity they are for the most part interchangeable. The former being the Assault class round and the latter battle class. Both are offered in mass in a semi auto format in both the traditional style "hunting" rifle and the more modern "SPORTING" rifle that the media, politicos, and the leftist gun control advocates have improperly applied the term assault rifle too.
What is the actual definition of an assault rifle you ask?? A medium power cartridge, in a weapon that has a switch to allow the firing of MORE THAN ONE bullet with a single pull of the trigger. This is not what is commercially available, semi auto is what is commercially sold, anything that fires more than 1 round per 1 pull of the trigger is highly regulated so I will assume you get this point.
Now is a Sporting Rifle more deadly than a hunting rifle?? Inherently NO!!!! As I and many have pointed out lethality is the result of the operator not the weapon. While it has been pointed out that Magazine capacity is really the primary difference between the 2. Well there are many traditional styled "hunting" rifles that have a box type mag that have options available that hold just as many as the "sporting" rifles do.
With all that said on the crux of your question. The sporting rifles like the AR variants in a plethora of calibers, the civilian AK's min 14s, and so on, have little difference other than outward physical appearance to their more traditional cousins. Since those rifles look like the weapons the military uses around the world, they must be the same thing right ?? As with any thing that has become political facts, actual definitions and common sense are tossed out the window in favor of sensationalism and scare tactics and manipulation to achieve the end goal. In essence the media has pushed the idea "since they look like scary military guns, they are scary military guns". Look to the CA ban on features a rifle can have on it, its a ban on appearance items for the most part not the weapon it self that ought to give you your answer more than anything.
While a sporting rifle and its military counter part have a ton in common other than the trigger group and the bolt carriers to allow bust rate fire, its also Highly illegal to mod your civilian shit to do that. There was an issue in WI in 08 where a man loaned a friend an AR15 that was worn out, and when he took it to the range it miss fired and ran burst of rounds. This was reported and the man who owned it was convicted of illegally owning and transferring a machine gun. In the 60's and early 70's the military was going around to sporting goods stores buying up bolt action Winchester model 70's and Remington 700's putting a hunting scope on these off the shelf guns to give to sniper teams in Vietnam. Does this mean the hunting rifle that is in nearly every ones home is actually a military rifle and should suffer the same fate as what is purposed for the so called assault rifles??

Oh it registered, I was simply furthering your point of calling out the idiots in power who want to pretend like one gun can do more damage than another gun.
