well it's interesting isn't it that over the past 50 years, we had marginal rates in the 70% range, then a low of 28%, and the federal take from GDP averaged pretty close to 19%.

so is it better to have a lower tax rate and more left in the public's bank accounts, or a higher rate and less?

Tax revenue increases because GDP almost always increases. Correlation does not equal causation (unless it supports your side, of course). If you follow the links I posted you will see the most respected economists saying that raising taxes increases revenue and lowering taxes decrease it. You will see that the Bush tax cuts are set to the single biggest contribution to the national debt. You can keep asserting false causation all you want, the facts say otherwise.

i do this all day, every work day cliche, i've prolly read more on this than most on this board. it's what i do.
i know the arguments from cbo etc. most are static analyses.\

the point i was trying to make is that a larger GDP is better. leaving the max in the taxpayer's pockets is always best.

why is it that with only very few exceptions we never have a balanced budget at the fed level?

Because we very rarely balance spending levels with tax revenues. The last time we did that was under Clinton when we had higher tax rates across the board.

you need to go back and research what happened and when.
clinton reduced tax rates at the same time agreeing with the new republican congress lead by gingrich to limit spending. we then got to a balanced budget, surplus really.

but you're right about too much spending. ;)

While this is true, the tax rates during that time were higher than they are now. They were at a level that allowed for the necessary revenues to be collected while not being so high as to stifle economic growth. You can go through all the mental hurdles you wish trying to justify lower (or even current) income tax rates, but the fact remains that we had a balanced budget during one of the most prosperous times in our history while income tax rates were higher than they are now. That is indisputable, and to argue that returning to the tax rates we had under Clinton is somehow draconian is disingenuous.

but you're right about too much spending. ;)
No one disagrees that spending needs to be cut. What's preventing that from happening is Republicans who refuse to pair spending cuts with necessary increases in revenue.

Not an Obama fan, however it is cool IMO that he would do an AMA.

ironic isn't it, that the day the DNC convention starts, its the one year anniversary of the Solyndra bankruptcy, and the day our national debt went over 16 trillion

Most likely by trolling accounts, under aged kids, or people from other countries voting.

Should have ID'd everyone before voting!
