Whatever happened to schools getting metal detectors after Columbine happened? I thought that was the big thing back then.

I have never been to a school with one.

My high school had one installed shortly after I graduated in 99. Kids also HAVE to walk with IDs. It was surprising to everyone because it is a pretty affluent town but i guess you had enough parents pushing for this so it went through.

I believe visitors at many schools have to be "buzzed in" like where my nephews attend. They see whomever walk up on CCTV, present ID and a reason, then they are let in.

I believe this to be the case at Sandy Hook, but he blasted his way through the glass.

How many schools let kids go to recess without a monitor? I have to drive by a couple in my town and I've seen adult monitors. Or perhaps had the kids a lanyard with a pendant for the locks. And off campus lunches for HS would have to be stopped, and really they should, be to deter the influx of drugs.

Or for that matter button combo locks. We've had them in several buildings I've worked in.

There's ways to implement this, if safety is the true issue at hand.

z31- I see. I wonder if there was a way to compartmentalise the office, so that he would have been limited to only the office.

We could "Monday morning quarterback" this till the cows come home. Don't take that as issuing a challenge.

Hope for the best, but do some planning for the worst.

Don't like it? Move to somalia. They've got lots of automatic weapons, no taxes and very little government. You'll love it.

A total ban of so called "assualt weapons" is not feasible. The majority of owners would not simple hand over their firearms. Who is going to collect these firearms when there not turned in? I've served in the military and I'm currently in law enforcement. Most guys I have known own multiple firearms that fit the "assualt weapons" and I know damn sure they wouldn't give up theirs and wouldn't go forcible collect from others without just cause and reason. So instead of being unrealistic in calling for bans try thinking more in terms of requiring better checks and training in firearms ownership. I think people in general don't know the basic's of firearms safety and use.
                My 2 cents.

And yes my grammar and spelling suck.

Do Armed Citizens Stop Mass Shootings?

An investigation by Mother Jones concluded that no more than 1.6 percent of mass shootings were ended by armed civilians.

According to gun nuts, more guns in the hands of private citizens should make us all safer because they will stop the murderers. OK, I guess in theory that could make sense. So since we currently have 88 weapons per 100 citizens in America (the highest rate ever in history and more than double the next highest country of Yemen) we should be seeing record-low mass murders, right?

Nice theory, but reality is a bitch. Oh and before sleeve or anyone else tries to discount all these numbers has somehow skewed:
We used a conservative set of criteria to build a comprehensive rundown of high-profile attacks in public places—at schools, workplaces, government buildings, shopping malls—though they represent only a small fraction of the nation's overall gun violence. The FBI defines a mass murderer as someone who kills four or more people in a single incident, usually in one location. (As opposed to spree or serial killers, who strike multiple times.) We excluded cases involving armed robberies or gang violence

Gun nuts also like to say that gun laws are useless, because criminals will simply get their guns by whatever means necessary. Hmmmm....

The more difficult you make something, the less likely people are to do it. If a want-to-be murderer has to find some black market connection and pay 10x the $ for a rifle that he used to be able to walk in to Wal-Mart and buy off the shelf, do you think he/she will be just as likely to follow through? Of course not. The harder you make something to do, the less people will be willing to go through the arduous task to complete it. It's basic human nature: deterrence.

Yeah, someone should post a chart of mass murders involving people, and those attributed to a firearm sans operator.

I think in the future they should replace all civilian guns with some type of Immobiliser type of guns that a police officer or even security guard can disable.

And all current civillian weapon can be made illegal.
And when ever the weapon is fired it will alert the police and with the location of the incident. It could also be able to alert the police if the weapon is to close to a school as weapons arent aloud at schools anyway, police computers or via satelllite can disable the weapon automatically.

It would take time and money and a group of skill full fabricators that can produce such a new revised type of gun with a immobiliser device built in for regular civilians, but it will be worth it at the end.

Lets shape our childrens future. Just a thought.

Yeah, lemme know how that works out for you there. Lets just give the state control over all our lives because, lets face it here, Uncle Sammy knows best, for each and every one of us.
