Although this graph is correct, the statistics behind it belie certain mistruth. Whats not mentioned is the backgrounds of the people creating these advances. Most of the true r&d jobs are filled by immigrants, not "americans". I use the term "americans" in those that are of birth. We import most of the world's best and brightest for our r&d. Where as our best & brightest have been going into finance for the past several decades. Not r&d. This comes from the fact we as a culture are obsessed with money, not creating things. We focus on the one, not the whole. To me the last great "american" r&d guru was Jonas Salk. He created the polio vaccine that helped the world. And shunned all the fame and money that went with it, giving the vaccine away. Name a recent "american" who invented something for something other than profit/fame?

And as for the whole opportunity/resources argument. Everyone may have the same opportunities, everyone does not have the same access to those opportunities. And access is the issue.

A December 2008 study released by the Harvard Business School found that immigrants comprise nearly half of all scientists and engineers in the United States who have a doctorate, and accounted for 67 percent of the increase in the U.S. science and engineering workforce between 1995 and 2006.
You stated that americans provide the bulk of r&d advances in the world. While yes, these advances come from america the country. They do not all come from american born scientist/researchers. They are being brought about mostly by scientist and researchers being brought here by corporations under H1-B visas. Granted this is helping the american economy, but it is not pushing american's to go into these position's.

Profit is supposed to be the byproduct of advancement, not the motif. The motif is supposed to be the betterment of society. We have forgotten this. Putting profit above all else. It's a large reason why this country is screwed up.

                      Again WTF are yous smoking

Yeah we have lots of the best and brightest coming over from else where, to work for American companies, Have forgotten all of your fucking US history???? This is the way it has always been here. Its part of what has made this country what it is. You know that melting pot thing that we have had preached and rammed into our skulls all thought out our govt approved public education. This is a good thing, many of these recruits are going to stay here......

This country was founded on free enterprise and the ability of all to go forth and do your own thing in the pursuit of fucking prosperity, we still have people from all over the world that are willing to give it all up for the chance to come here for that one very thing!!!!! If you happen to come up with something that make the world a better place in doing so thats great. Just so happens that shit that makes the world a better place seems to sell really well and there for there is the profit motive.

You take away the motive of profit there there would be little advancement in the world at any time in history. Its the cold hard reality of how the real world works. You live in a fantasy land people in general are not our there for the betterment of the world there are those seldom few, but in general everyone is out there to cover their own ass and handle their families needs.

Last stat I read we are graduating 70k Engineers every year here in the US, and thats more Per capita than almost anywhere else in the world. Tis true China and India are churning out even more in number but we only have 1/3 the population of both of those countries.

Firstly, try reading a post completely. Then pause to actually think about it before replying. Your gut shot responses are getting tiring.

You took someones post about danish society, used r&d spending to refute it. Stating that their culture is faulted due to their lack of r&d spending. Which according to the statistics your wrong again.

According to the most recent correlating data I could find (2008), Denmark spent 2.08% of GDP on r&d, where the US spent 2.79%. Given GDP to population size, Denmark actually spent close to the same. So suck it.

And for your historical angle, history remembers those few that made advances without profit as the driving factor. Not those that's sole motive was profit. Because only great men value society more than money.

It was one example out of many. The socialistic states are more concerned about redistribution of money and providing services, as opposed to leaving the money in the private arena where it could be put to better use to create more wealth. BTW the US spends more money on Scientific Research and R&D than the next 6 countries on the list combined!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Are we talking about govt spending in the data you found or are we talking total expenditures for both private and public sectors????

By they way you must not be reading my post very well, since you are trying to use 2008 data when my linked chart show 2010................... Try putting a space between the 8 and the ) there genius.

My arguments are getting tiring. Your useless points to try and pick fights for the sake of picking a fight has gotten more tiresome.

That stuff frequently winds up benefiting all of us- ARPAnet, for a plainly-obvious example.
