er, I realize that. I was hypothesizing if they eliminated the gas tax and charged a tax based on mileage, people like me who often drive outside of the country would pay more than their fair share.
another issue along that same lines is people who come in from outside the country and put miles on our roads wouldn't pay any taxes. right now most of them are buying gas here so they are at least paying something for the use of our roads. I've never once bought gas in Canada though so they have the same issue I guess.
it's small potatoes in the grand scheme of things but it's never cut and dry.
the other option is to increase the gas tax significantly which would be fine with me. I'm sure I'll be paying $5 a gallon in the next couple years regardless.
